Yeah it is a killer shot. One of the best I have seen in a long time.
Blows me away that he is still on the production 9'3 molded quad.
Raises the rocker line issue as well. I mean he drops pipe backhand on that board!
Is it a skill thing where he trades rocker for drive to project away from the wave when required? I watched Loco's ride a board with a lot of rocker a few weeks back (6' palmy)and he just got mowed down by the wave - he just couldnt escape it as the rocker just slowed him up. I know Blane has changed the rocker line on all the new boards, but we all know the 9'3 so well and IK is still smashing it on that thing!!
I reckon as Hilly says, once it's big, the old PSH rockers come into their own. Where I found it more limiting was on smaller hollower stuff or when trying to surf tighter in the pocket. I'd imagine Blanes new smaller models will address this.
My laguna has what could be considered a lot of overall rocker - 7 inches nose and 4 in the tail but is very drivey and never gets mowed down even in double overhead. I reckon it has a lot to do with how the rocker is distributed plus the use of concaves.
I still reckon that for Sup surfing to really progress we will need boards that can turn in tighter arcs but with mucho drive and acceleration. can't wait to see the new models!!
