Hi,

Anyone done this run in a typical SSW Perth Seabreeze. Is it ok or a bitch to get around the Point for the home run to mullas.

I did Trigg to Sorrento a couple of weeks ago in 15 knots SSW and had to zig zag my way down the coast and got sick of paddling on the right side Ok in 15 knots but think I might have struggled heading out side on in 20 plus knots at my skill level.

Any suggestions on the best runs, northern sub's for the beginner DWers. Or do I suck it up and head down to do the city to trigg run or port to swannies run? and just work on building up the right side into popeye poportions.

cheers

In order of preference

Dawesville run

Port to City

City to Trigg

Pinaroo to Mullas (Forget hillaries unless you paddle right out at the start)

Trigg to Sorrento

The more south the better for Metro runs any west they are all sh1te.

Thanks Hilly,

Looks like its City to Trigg/Metts as I am after something local and quick to do to fit in with all the kids sports and all other **** I have going on at the moment....

I did 1 1/2 hours down at Leighton last night on a surf ski ~ 12-14km covered chucking laps from the groyne to the surfclub. The ski picks up all the little runners it was only 10-12knots last night but heaps of good runs and glides.

I know AKhawk paddles a ski any one else? It should be a good cross over to SUP and I sure it will help on the SUP as reading the bumps and linking runners has got to cross over to supping.

Cheers

Another run that I am keen to try sometime would be Point Peron to somewhere near Woodman Point, I reckon that would be a pretty good one, anyone done it?

Is anyone keen to do it?

I aware that leaving cars around the Woodman Point area is fraught with danger but surely there is somewhere a little bit South of there that you could land, I don't really know the area but isn't there a boat ramp/breakwater there.

Woodies isnt too bad with cars, just dont leave anything in them and try and park close to where the kiters go...

Some of the ski paddlers are doing woodies to south beach freo about 6 kms I think. Bit protected so dont get the swell just wind generated runners except around crazy waves.

Theres is a fair bit of boat traffic in the sound and all those groynes around henderson scare me if something went wrong. I remember almost getting swamped in the fishing Kayak by a big barge tug combo mid sound chasing snapper last year....

Hi Shane,

The Hillary's to North Mulla's run is the best on the coast in terms of runners and direction. There's not a lot of joy in the Hillarys part of the run as you need to paddle on the right mostly to get to Pinnaroo and then it's pretty much straight downwind and the runners are superb. Very easy to link runners and plenty of them.

I've done the City beach to Sorrento, Brighton to Sorrento, Brighton to Pinnaroo, Sorrento to Pinnaroo, Port to Swanbourne and Brighton to Mullaloo runs. Most are pretty hard work in anything but a dead southerly, and I prefer slight SSE to make it easier, but the runners are always refracted towards the shore so you need to keep making adjustments to your course even though the wind is cross to cross off, unlesss you paddle over 1km offshore.

As a beginner, if there is a big swell, getting out from any of the surf beaches can be a nightmare. A few of our crew and one experienced guy got hammered fromBrighton to almost Trigg where they gave up after breaking a leggy trying to get through the nasty shorey on a particularly big day.

The beauty of Hillary's to North Mulla's is it's an easy entry to the water through the Marina or, even if you start at Pinnaroo, the start is a doddle. Only downside of the Pinna's to Mula's run is it's short, but action packed.

My thoughts on other places for great runners is the last 1-2km coming into Sorrento and from Trigg to Marmion. Prior to these spots, it seems pretty messy and random and although fun, it's a lot of hard work.

We'll be running the trailer from North Mulla's upwind throughout the season, but I try and pick the days where the wind is more southerly so we get maximum fun.

We usually announce it on our Facebook page here:

www.facebook.com/Stand.Up.Paddle.Perth?ref=hl

Just "like" the page to be kept up to date with what we are organizing. Weather has been crap for the last little while, but is shaping up again.

Cheers mate,

DM

Did a quick one from Brighton to sorrento. Bit west but had a blast. Best run past trigg I have had. Couple of long linking runs, so yes some serious zig zag work but that is the price you pay.

Tim and I beat Marcus but we did have a start

At about 2km the mullas run is really only good for beginners and flat water paddlers as it is so protected. Like paddling on the river really. No open ocean runners that are so hard to catch but really rewarding.

When I read this thread originally I pretty much agreed with Hilly's list of DW runs and at that stage I had just done the Dawesville run and didn't think you could top that but I did say.

Ok well I finally got around to doing this run today with Rick who lives down that way, and I have got to say that I rate this as the BEST SUP DWer I HAVE EVER DONE.

It does lack a few of those big ocean swell runners that you get on the Dawesville run but it is just so easy.

Yes I did do the King of the CUT and The Doctor and they were both good but....

Rick is pretty new to DWing and it is also my first real season so we said at the start that we would just pretty much cruise and try to concentrate on picking up runners.

The wind was blowing around 20knots and the direction was perfect, by the time you get a couple of k's out the runners start getting progressively better, they just keep getting better the whole way.
I read recently something about DJ's well groomed bay runs and have watched the video's noting how smooth the runners were, well this run is similar.

I did the fastest average speeds I have done averaging over 9kph pretty much effortlessly (I am pretty slow and was feeling as flat as on the day so only averaged around 8kph doing the doctor).
In the last couple of k's when I picked up the pace a little bit on the home run it was over 10kph.
I know that is not fast by some peoples standards but it is fast for me and was done without really trying.

I am keen to go again and thoroughly recommend Rick's Rocky Run

Looks good kent will have to give it a go let me know next time your doing it did freo to city tonight some good runs not quite as quick as last Thursday 2 min slower than today but lots of small left runners taking us back out If there's any west in the wind you will paddle a lot on the right I watch for more south so ssw is ok but S is the go for that freo down the coast run for sure

Yep definitely the least messy DWer close to Perth.......still frothing over todays run but we believe we can milk a bit more out of it.

We nearly attempted this run and after checking out my track from todays run this is next on the cards it would end up being about 22kms vs 16kms to Woodies boat ramp.

Starting at Crystals Beach at Point Peron through the coat hanger bridge near Garden Island past the tip of Woodman Point and ending up at South Beach Freo.

Tighty's tip for the longest and cleanest DWer in Perth, stay tuned.

Thanks tightlines, looks good, i have found on the surfski that the smaller waves (those ones on top of the swell) give the best runs

I have been doing a few surfski downwinders of late, been doing triangle work down at Port beach and Hillarys and last weekend did my first surfski coastal Dwer on the ski from Dutchies to Trigg, just on 15km. My core was toast by Scarbs and had a few get outs but great fun catching long runners and so fast. Following day did a kiting DWer.

The good thing with the surfski is that its easier to tack paddle back out to get the right direction and heaps more fun if you have any upwind paddling (triangle work). Must get back on the SUP, to many toys not enough days

Cheers
