The fact there are so many of the same boards around got me thinking that if one was stolen it would be hard to actually identify the board. Has anyone done anything to their board to personalise it whilst still keeping within the original character?

some brands put serial numbers on their boards. if you have one note it down so you can track it if needed.

but otherwise plenty of people have been doing custom deck grips though admittedly these can be replaced

Dymo labels are waterproof, easy to read and stay on forever. I have them on my kiteboards.

You could sand a spot to a matte finish and write your name and phone number with a waterproof marker. Maybe put a touch of clear coat over the top. I have done that on kiteboards in the past. I actually got a phone call when somebody found a board I had sold a couple of years earlier. I was able to return the board to the guy who bought it.

If you want to be really thorough, do all of the above and scratch your name and number or an identifying mark into somewhere unobtrusive as well. Say a pattern of notches into the inside edge of a fin box.

Generally thieves are opportunists. If it's easy to steal they will grab it and run. With a little basic care/paranoia you can avoid being a target.

Scubasim's new board has an awesome spray job that could never get mixed up with anything. Maybe if we're lucky she'll put a pic up here for everyone to see.

Mctavish have just started injecting a chip into the core of boards which you register
on a data base for id if stolen and recovered.

If your getting a custom ( Any board not just a SUP) get the shaper to write your license number on the stringer with the measurement. Easy way to identify it, not sure how you could do it on a popout though

Its a bugger if you sell your car tho. I guess its like a ID number in a way.

I take pics of all my boards when I get them, that way if they do go missing I have some evidence.

Doggie not your car rego, your license number off your drivers license. Never changes. I believe engraving it on your home tv was big in the eighties...

An easy way to personalise your board is 'seal' your custom decals with Monster Paint Traction; it dries clear, is permanent and doesn't hold any water.

Thanks for all the responses, I like the ideas of having custom boards/paint however that could be more expensive so for me the Monster Paint Traction product is best as you can spray it over stickers/decals/writing etc. While taking note of the serial number is a good idea it's not something that identifies the board to the untrained eye (in case of theft) and personalising with rego and DL info may make the board difficult to sell at a later date.

Dude,
you can pick up MP Traction in NSW from Outdoors and Beyond in Nowra and Huskisson, or the Hobie Kayak Centre in Caringbah (thats where I got mine). Not sure where you can get it in QLD - you could try the Hobie shops in Brisbane and Cooroy (Hobie Cat Australasia import it).
