So the real answer is you guys don't know any better than I do. Why didn't you just say so?
I hear your frustration, Greg. Some of my worst days have been surfing into strong off shores. The prone guys are catching waves left and right and I'm getting blown right off the back of them. Really pisses me off and after a while I start yelling and cussing and slapping the living crap out of the water with my paddle; ie i throw a temper tantrum, which at the least gets me a very wide berth from everyone else out in the water.
Since I will never be Laird, my only solution has been to never go out in winds over 10 knots on my 9-8 Starboard. It's just too small, too small, and with a wide nose that gets wind under it too easily. At times like that, I haul out my 11-2, which has a lot more weight to it and if I start paddling for a wave early enough I can sometimes build momentum early enough to beat the wind and get a ride, especially if I'm crouching somewhat.
When the window gets close to 15 knots, however, I pack it in. It's heartbreaking to me to lose so many waves -- waves the prone guys could get if I wasn't there messing things up.
