I'm interested as to what sort of paddling speeds people are sustaining in flat water, with no wind or swell assistance.

Downwinder mentioned the Aussies can do 10km/hr, but the Hawaiian's are pushing towards to 12.... ???

Edit;
Or winning times over a course / race, with an estimate of race length... etc.
Thanks,
Simon

I think Downwinder was refering to that speed while doing a wind assisted run..
As for me i got no idea,no wind i surf,windy i go downwind..

10k's an hr in the flats would be pretty good.

board speed in a dw er, so many things to consider. are the hawaiians pushing 12ks everywhere including the flats or only at that famed run

i'll add at the national short coarse last year that had international competitors, top three places - aussies

Thanks Towny & Lacey.

I thought Downwinder was mentioning up to 25km/hr in seriously good downwind conditions in Hawaii, with loads of glide... ???

(Seabreeze needs an internal search engine... !!! Or is there one, that I'm not aware of ?)

I think the best equaliser is river conditions, with minimal wind and current, or at least head out and come back, which goes a fair way to canceling wind, tide, currents, etc.

Simon

Edit;
here's the apology to Downwinder.... Sub 5 minute k's, so yeah, that's 12km/hr. Not 25km/hr as I mentioned above... !!

Found it !! Sub 5 kilometers !

Topping out at about 13km/hr.... This thread was funny !! Downwinder on the calculator, getting it pretty much correct. And Meahuna and Downwinder going at it !! Before the apology !!

But it doesn't answer the "flatwater no wind" question !

I often do a run from Green Point to Ricketts Point and back. Straight line on the map it's 9k but that line goes over land - guessing it's closer to 10 because I go out a fair way to avoid boats at the marina. Consistently takes me 2 1/2 hours for about 19 or 20k if the wind is less than 10knots, did it twice last week on the Surf Race. Used to take the same time on the Penetrator but I paddle faster now than I did then.

This is not pushing super hard, just an exercise/fun/chat to fisherman outing but I am sweating when I stop - the sort of pace that I could certainly keep up for longer if I had to. I find that I always go just a little slower on my own than I would if I was paddling with friends, listen to music and get into the meditation side of the sport.

So for me, spot on 8k/hour average on a 12'6 board in zone out mode

And down-wind, well Dave and I did the Maui Molokai on 14' boards, 41/2 hours for 47k on the GPS so that came out to be 10.4 k/hour lightish wind and swell assisted. Funny thing with that was I'm sure we could have both gone harder but we were too freaked out by the whole thing and the thought of running out of steam over that distance - we both finished feeling absolutely fine, guess that's better than destroying yourself though!

For me maintaining a high speed is no fun at all.. unless it's down hill..

Our regular down wind run from St Kilda to Sandy is ten kilometers and we often do it in one hour.. So what's that.. about 10 kph.

I reckon that one day we'll do it in about 45 minutes.. So what would that be.. about 15 kph. (in 30-40 knots tail wind)
