A couple of sessions in the river was a boost for my confidence, maybe too much. I paddled in the ocean to try and catch a wave, It didn't happen, the combination of swell, tide and a little chop blew my confidence, it was like chalk and cheese.

It's strange how difficult it feels to get back on the board, stand up and start paddling again after falling off in moving water.

It would be nice to be able to paddle in a straight line

My knees hurt when I came in, actually I can feel a little hurt all over.

I'm can see I'm going to need alot of practice.

Being in the waves felt so foreign.

It was even harder to paddle straight in the breeeze.

I only fell off when someone was watching.

The paddle is handy for fending of the reef

I'm going to try again tomorrow.

Ah so Im not the only one who felt like this.
I know exactly that feeling.
I even got to the point of thinking that this is crap. Why did I even start?
Adding waves, swell, white water and wind changes SUPing from flat water to waves like youll never believe.
Persist and every session gets better than the last.
Where are you SUPing Cranky?

Hi all,

Got my good mate out on her 10'6 naish yesterday. She is a kitesurfer and has surfed when she was younger.
She didn't even think twice about paddling out the back of currumbin to catch some waves. She was so stoked, even when she was falling off trying to paddle out you couldn't wipe the smile off her face.

After getting out the back it didn't take her long to catch her first wave. She was laughing her head off.

So with the correct advice and technique you can achieve great fast results.
Best tip i can give is to paddle with other sup'ers that look like they know what they are doing and you will only improve your skills faster in the waves.

Just wait til you catch your first perfect clean and glassy waves, you will be hooked. It was wicked at currumbin yesterday, got about 2 hours in the morning and another 2 hours in the arvo, so glassy and about a peeky 2ft.

Cheers Angie XX

When your paddling to catch a wave are you still standing the same position or at what point do you move a foot forward, it feels real awkward.

As Jake said when you feel your board lift a bit and start to take off on the wave , in one swift motion switch to your preferred surf stance ! If i have just turned my board facing the shore i stay in my natural footer stance and paddle and take off this way, does take some practice. I reckon one of the best bit of advice is dont look down , always look straight ahead whilst you are learning, you tend to fall in if you look down

I think that's pretty good advise brooko. I had some good surfing conditions on the w/e it was freezing and I was tired by the end of it but on quite a few waves I found myself nose diving and I think it was because I was more focused on looking down into the wave rather than looking towards the target. I'll give that a try next time.

Interesting, now I'm looking at waves that I wouldn't bother surfing as a potential paddle wave ( that is when I get the wave thing happening ) everywhere I look I see more.
