The famous Severn Bore - would be good to SUP this, much better chance of staying on the wave if you can avoid the Kayakers dropping in!

Is there anything similar in Oz and has anyone ridden it?

Great footage roger. I don't think there is anything similar here.

Most parts of the southern half of Australia are in severe drought - we now have a whole generation of kids growing up who will never know the pleasures of all the sprinklers on and a water-slide in the backyard.

I certainly haven't heard of a river tidal wave like that in Australia, there are a few standing waves in rivers in the snowy mountains that I used to white-water kayak on. You could probably SUP these but it would be very dangerous as generally the white-water in Oz is created by very shallow rocky environments.

It occurs because of a very high spring tide running upstream against the natural flow of water.
It rises and falls as it travels upstream, this video has more people on it than I have ever seen, used to live alongside the Severn and we used to watch the Bore - never used to be more than half a dozen on the wave. Just shows the increase in popularity of surfing and kayaking.

And re SUPing a standing wave - this is from Pembrokeshire in the south west of Wales - that's Old South Wales to you lot down there!!

The Bitches are a tidal anomoly.

Here are a couple of vids...

the first is the Waimea river standing wave, no SUP action on it but pretty cool all the same. I haven't seen any SUP vid from this wave, however a few forums have said people have done it so I guess just a matter of time before it hits youtube.

The second is SUPing rapids on the Colorado River.

I did a year fishing in Northern Australia years ago and the tides up there are 30+ feet, so I rekon there would be similar somewhere.
