reckon that same storm front hit us here in northwest tas Sunday afternoon , it was pretty savage , just heard couple of kayakers were rescued farther along the coast .

wouldn't be too quick to judge those involved .

Last year we had a similar situation here . Life member of the local surf club / previous state surf ski champion / paddles 10 kms every day in the ocean , took his new surfski out for a paddle with 2 friends . Hit by a sudden off shore change and all 3 had to be rescued , the new surfski was last seen on its way to Victoria .

then again 2 weeks back driving along the coast and there is an obvious learner windsurfer out in the ocean in a howling offshore wind . - he didn't a require rescue party

Why all so negative.. I'm sure they are all very experienced paddlers otherwise they wouldn't of even been out there to start with.. Unfortunately sometimes things don't go to plan.. DWing is an extreme sport performed often in extreme conditions **** can I wrong sometimes..
Reading a media story about the incident and making an assumption isn't exactly being the " sharpest tools in the shed"

Reports I hear is they were all ok and would of all made it back safely on there own but it was the public that saw them head out in the wild conditions that called it in to the authorities .

Hopefully DJ and crew got some epic footage of some of the swell I would sure be keen to see what 50+ kn looks like out there

Nobs do you paddle and downwind??
Pretty sure 25-50kn 99% of downwind supers would be frothing on winds like that and be jumping out of there skin to be amongst it! Nob post if I ask me

You might want to tell the police that so they can amend their news website.

http://www.vicpolicenews.com.au/news/2344-paddle-boarders-rescued-corio-bay.html

Would they have made it back safely after they stopped "clinging to a channel marker", and once they warmed themselves up from "mild hypothermia"?

Sounds very much like DJ vu to me.

And the reports are actually fabrication.
Nobody was rescued. Police kept on insisting last two hop in boat.
The paddler hanging onto the marker bouy was doing so as he was talking to the police.

Never believe what you read ( and the police don't work to a quota system)

Hahaha police media website is no different to any other media outlet they are all jurno's getting basic facts and fabricating a story to make it read worthy..

The facts in this case are very different to how to media have made it out to be.. Surprise surprise..

I wasn't there, but I know the area... From memory there are several marker 'posts' across the shallow spit / shoal. Plus the bigger channel markers.

My $2 bet, is that he was holding onto one of those small marker posts, in the shallower spit area... If I'm wrong, the person holding onto the channel marker can collect their $2 from me!

Not sure that I want to enter the debate, but I agree with others who say don't be quick to judge.

I'm sure the people involved were aware of the forecast but for those who don't live down this way you have to realise that the old adage about Melbourne weather is pretty true - "if you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes". Maybe it's global warming, but I reckon that the weather down here is becoming harder and harder to predict accurately - just ask the Bureau of Meteorology!

So, does this mean that we give up our sport and never embark on another downwinder? I think you know the answer to that question.

I'm sure all involved will have had the proper safety equipment for a paddle in a bay, but that doesn't mean that things can occasionally not go as planned. There are many, many downwinders undertaken in Port Phillip, Corio and Westernport Bays without any issues. SUP paddlers down here have been actively involved with the authorities in setting up the safety regime for SUP paddling and the current regulations set out what are sensible safety requirements for the sport.

I do a bit of casual pole boarding down at my local (Bay) beach and see issues (especially with kite boarders) frequently. That doesn't mean that we say, no more wind/kite surfing. There are guys out now as I write this sailing in 30+ knots and bigger waves than I reckon would have been in Corio Bay on Sunday.

Also, you only have to watch 30 seconds of a "Fails" video on YouTube to see people doing much more stupid things than downwinding.

So my 2 cents worth is, think carefully before you criticise - unless you are just wanting to troll (in this regard, I haven't seen Legion post on here for ages, until now).

thats you in the corner of your avatar is it not? if so, then you are packing a punch for your size, I mean to fill that sweet innocent young girls mouth is quite a feet (no pun intended).

have to have a little chuckle when you see kiters in trees.

After staying silent up to now on this thread I thought it important to share the facts ....here they are ;
8 of us left from North Shore Geelong with a 25-30 knott NW clear skies and no signs on the horizon of a major shift in the weather ( in hindsight we were wrong !)
WSW hit us 2 kms in to the 6.5km crossing at 50knotts causing us to miss the point Henry tip of Corio bay if we kept downwinding - swells went from 2 foot runners to 4-5 in minutes .
Everyone sat , kneeled or prone paddled on their boards to be able to paddle cross to the wind and swell to make the point ... 5 of us made it in OK and the other 3 would have but the coast guard arrived after being alerted by residence from where we left.

The coast guard police and ambos were all very cool about it and 2 people were checked by the ambos for mild hypothermia due to being on the boat wet and in the wind . Temp dropped from 28 to 18 when the front hit.

Had there been no one to alert the coast guard everyone would have made it . The 2 holding the shipping marker where less than 300 metres from point Henry and would have easily paddled across 20 minutes later when the wind dropped and went NW again ...

Corio Bay is not large and no one was ever in danger. So in hindsight should we have gone out in those conditions ?? Maybe not given what we know now or at least would have started further South from where we did and it would have been all time !!

Downwinding is not without it's risks like any water sport you just need to be prepared - we had a mobile phone and could have called the coast guard at any time if we thought we needed them.

There were countless rescues that afternoon and very sadly a fisherman lost his life when his boat capsized. Several Kiters also had to be rescued but media didn't run that as it's probably a bit too common.

Regardless of what water sport you do it's important to look out for each other and be supportive as it can be a dangerous playground at times !

Enough said! be safe and take care out there people....

Thanks Dave for clearing that up.. My vid from that day shows how beautiful and calm things were when we headed off.. and how quickly things changed.

Also.. There is a big difference between being rescued because you need rescuing and being rescued because it is forced apon you.. even when it's not needed.. They have a duty of care to not leave utill all is 100% fine and that's what they did.. We appreciate that.

Five minutes after we were all together to head back to the start if was beautiful sunshine and calm conditions again.. That's Melbourne for you.. and that what Mother Nature can do.. anywhere.
