Hi there, looking for advice on where to paddle for a beginner in Sydney and general tips on how to take good care of the board. Just bought my first board Naish Alana 9'6" and I can't wait to it out this summer!

Depends where you live really… there's loads of good places in and around the Harbour for instance. If you're on the Northern Beaches then Narrabeen Lakes is a really good place to learn as it's generally quite sheltered. Other areas to consider would be at Balmoral and also Manly cove around to Little Manly and Collins Flat.

As far as looking after your board it might be worth investing in a good quality board bag - try Flying Objects as a start - as this will obviously protect the board but it also has the added advantage of making it easier to carry around. Just make sure you never put the board in it when it's wet… And never leave your board in the sum for too long either…

Another thing to consider is have you got rail tape on your board? Or failing that you can get guards - or tape - that goes on the blade of your paddle to protect against scratching the board.

Welcome aboard, just in time for Summer!

Thanks Todzilla for the tips, got the rail tape on the board and I have to get a bag for it. Took the board from Manly cove to Jilling cove and back on Sunday. Coming back was a struggle against the wind and the water got very choppy for me.

Great to see the board matches your bikini

extendable paddles aren't that great. If you intend to paddle often invest in a decent carbon fibre one cut to your size

Moyzie - Loving the board. As for the sexy girl sup post ...thanks for the compliment!

Lobes- haha...matching by accident, definitely didn't buy the board to matched with my bikini! Just paddling on weekends, will check the carbon fibre ones out.

Hi Railay, great to see a stoked new SUP owner getting out and having fun!

We produced this board and paddle care guide many years ago. There maybe be some useful tips here for you-

Thanks for the info AA! Making the most of my SUP this summer.

Actually got my board from Balmoral Paddlesurf. I was a regular there for the last 3 sundays, the guy there was resourceful and helpping picking my board.

Manly to Jilling is a pretty good hike for a beginner - like you said, that can get pretty choppy with lots of backwash off the rocks, especially in Sunday's Nor-Easter!!!

Beautiful part of the world though! Get yourself down to Narrabeen Lakes as well, lots of sheltered areas and loads of other like-minded SUP-ers.

Glad you're enjoying the board...
