Definitley a different concept with the air pocket under neath, however a few years ago Suplove got naval architect Andy Dovell involved in designing their race boards. Here is a little bit about Andy:
Andrew has been an acknowledged worldwide leader in technical yacht design for the past 20 years. Over these years his skills have been honed with his involvement in 5 America's Cups; serving as Designer of Record on 3 challenges. Andrew moved to Australia in 1989, drafted by Alan Bond to bring tank testing technology to Australia.
Evidence of the effectiveness of his ground-breaking work on keel wings in combination with canting keels is on display on the giant-killing Atomic, a 50' racer that regularly outpaces even 80' racing yachts.
While they haven't gone into production here is Aus they are giant killers in the US. Chris Stephen beat Jamie and Danny on a 14 at the last Florida Bowl race.
I have a proto 12'6 Ocean board and it is extremely quick, as long as you can stay on it. The reason for its instability is the hull that runs all the way down to the finbox. This is slightly off set by the sunken deck.
The interesting thing about these boards are that they are coming from a completley different background. Many of the production boards come from designers with surf/kite/wind surfer backgrounds. Coming from a naval architect these boards look very diffrerent as most of the guys here in WA can confirm from seeing to my board.
These photos are of the 14 Flatwater Stingray that I paddled in last years Hawkesbury Classic.
