i've had a go on it. its good, but i prefer the ocean board- just seems more paddle-able to me. dj i think all boards push water- the more bull nose boards just do it straight away where more displacement type boards spread it out down the rail.

i know one thing- displacement nose sup boards don't belong in the ocean where a well designed 'bullnose' ocean board does very well in the flats too


i think you really would want to be a dedicated flatwater paddler to get one of these.

no the bull nose board is faster dw and the new Flatwater is faster in the flat!

I'm with RJK id like to see it downwind.. I think the new fanatic DW board for sure is magical in real ocean downwind with big runners and direct winds but what about small short runners with often choppy messy stuff would the flat water nose not piece better keeping the board moving quicker ?? I'm no expert but sure am intersted would be great to see a video of the boards side by side downwind thanks jacko and jake if you can make that happen hahahaha

Don't know about pushing water DJ. Any conditions where there's rolling swell and side chop the bull nose glides beautifully. It's certainly one of the factors that's made the DW board so popular. Even in flatwater races it picks up runners and glides. This new nose is more specific for flat water but looking at the vid and talking to Quinny, Sebastion and Jacko I suspect it's not going to be too bad in small chop either.

We'll get a good idea when Steve Morrison does a time trial on it at JPP this weekend.

Agree 14ft for the average joe is to big to be going in and out of any decent beach break in a congested race. Even In iron man they can the surf ski leg of the women's race when the surf gets to big because it just gets two dangerous.

I'm new to this site and I hope you don't mind me joining in. Although I'm in yankeeland! I'm Not a true yank, but a South African, now living over here so go easy on me lads. The new board seems to have some similar qualities to the older 2013 Falcon and this I like. Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks as if there is not as much rocker as the 2013 Falcon, but the nose volume and cutting bow are similar. The new board as it sits in the water by itself, clearly has a little rocker, and the nose doesn't truly rest in, or even on the water. The nose sits slightly above, so Im thinking a little bump might be what this board needs for the nose to penetrate the water and for it to reach full potential. Maybe this is where it will shine the most, Flatwater with a slight bump. By watching the teaser vid on Fanatics site, the board looks quick but I'd like to know if they are faster than the older Falcons, preferably the 2013 Falcon 14x25 in comparison , and FYI I really appreciate the Aussie input you guys, much respect.

How do they compare stability wise to the Dw boards?

I know they are different widths so hard to compare but with wider tails how do they feel?

Maybe so. But I don't think a 12'6" belongs in a flat water distance race, a downwinder or an open ocean marathon. Even a 14' is pushing it.

The silly thing is, because a small minority of races take place in decent surf, all other forms of racing around the world gets compromised and the sport is stymied.

Never said it did. In another words dont limit the sport by 1 board. Of coarse there are exceptions to that, being the professional international races which probably needs some consistancy. I also dont think "they" care what happens on local events around the world. i.e. events all over Oz have the ability to set the classes as they see fit. The biggest hurdle would be pleasing the punters. No matter what the race, it always seems (well here on SB anyway) that someone wants another class to suit them.

I also dont think its the surf making the international races 12.6. My bet would be logistics being a large one, along with some corperate stuff. And I thought that there still plenty of 14foot and unlimited class races??? BOP long distance, Molaki, ISA distance, Maliko, just to name a few.

I think Kissa's really referring to the open ocean racing side when he talks to 14 footers. Correct me if I'm wrong Dave. Without diverting the thread open ocean racing would be better if we were all on 14s. Apples for apples rather than some racing 12'6" and others on 14s. Perhaps we need to start the thread again Dave.

With regard to how the new 2014 flatwater paddles, Jacko or Jake are probably the best to comment. I won't have a good go on it until the weekend. From all accounts it is faster than the 2013 board and side by side they are quite different. When the production board arrives I'll get some comparison photos up.
