I caught up with a mate of mine today that just had this custom 17ft made. I have no idea about race boards but the rudder system is like no other i have seen.
I asked him if he would mind me posting some pics for you racing guys to see, taken with I Phone so not too flash...

Cheers Marty

looks good, and if its like any of the other deep sups, it will fly, the rudder system looks a tad different to my glide

At a guess :- Less chance of catching weed at the base , the fixed fin takes the impact if you hit a bank and won't bend the shaft on the steering rudder , more hold if you broach , more steering responsive with water flowing off a straight plane to the rudder angle (like the prop wash to a rudder in a boat) might be more drag though IMHO.

Interesting sterring set up on the deck which part steers it and beautiful finish BTW.

I reckon the stability of the deep in the ocean is better for ( me ) as I struggle with the fanatic.
My 2cents worth

Fanatic's are great boards, very light and go fast. Though I have heard a few feel not so stable in the surf or open water.

The DEEP will be what ever you want it to be. They are custom made. Go see Simon at Dolphin. He shapes them. Im pretty sure they have a few demo's. I have been stoked with my DEEP 12.6. I would 100% buy another over any brand.

In Australia Simon from DEEP is onto it when it comes to SUP boards he da man. I was there when Simon was inventing this new rudder system onto it I told Simon to patent it.

When in Maui Mark Raaphorts is the best shaper in the world when it comes to Downwind SUP race boards. ( A True Master Craftsman )

I'll have a DEEP 14' (new model, standard construction) at the Iron Cove race on Sunday: http://summerseries.blastpaddlers.com/event-5/

And a DEEP 12'6" (new model, carbon innegra construction) at the next SPSC Comp on 1 April:
www.cyberlearn.com.au/spsc/events.html

Very keen to share the experience of paddling a DEEP - I love watching people's minds blow.

Hey DJ

Just spoke to my mate the width of board is 26 inches wide. This width is just behind the heels, if this makes any sense.

Cheers Marty

I'm thinking use one or the other, not both together...fin or Rudder, with both removable?

i've seen it done, gives you some options. you wouldn't run the two of them.

great looking board, however at 17' with not much rocker, displacement nose- i would say it would be a handful in a full on down winder.

looks a like a small to medium conditions type of board.

i would love to see that board with some rocker and a planing nose

I've just had a fin box put in my glide 17, running it at the mo with a fixed fin and the steering mech completely removed. I like it.
