they are big boards with a lot of foam and area that can be driven very hard by your weight and the power of the wave.
touch wood, i surf dw boards that aren't designed to be surfed. so far i know when to back off or even jump off if i don't like the the way things are shaping up

Yes, big boards, and even without a rider, there is so much surface area for a breaking wave to force around, and to force a break.
Yes Lacey, it is also good to "know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em". So to speak.
It would be good to see a guy like Dave Kalama give instruction on what to do, and what not to do, for board preservation.
