Nice. Would you be better off on the Maliko Jav for that?

I believe that is a Maliko Javelin, looks like the nose is curving up. (I could be wrong)

Not a Maliko. Its a Jav from a couple of years ago 2014 I think.

Yes it's the 2014 X26 Jav.. The next Jav had the current upside down nose shape.. and the Maliko Jav came the year after.. This X26 board is one of the fastest and best DW boards that Naish ever made but it was a little tippy for bigger people.. The Maliko Jav without the cutting nose was slightly more stable.. but IMO it's slightly more of a DW hybrid board that excels also on flat water..

This vid shows how gliding on DW boards is all about trim and control.. not being afraid to move forward on the board and keeping close to the centerline of the board.. It would be excellent training for doing downwinders..

Ok, interesting. But I still don't quite understand: given that the guy in the video is basically surfing, why wouldn't he be better off on the latest Maliko than the 2014 Javelin? Is the current Maliko not as good for surfing as the 2014 Javelin? I'd have thought that the kind of mucking about on a 14 that this video shows would be exactly where a hybrid type board would be perfect, and the extra stability and control, and ease of trimming, would be useful...?

Not everyone has the latest greatest.. Maybe that's an old board.. or maybe it's an old vid..

I've had both boards and IMO in those conditions the newer Maliko Jav would surf that flat wave even better..

I think I remember seeing that video quite a while ago, so I think it's probably an older video rather than someone using an older Javelin.

Cheers for the opinion. I'm looking for an all-round/light downwind board that is reasonably durable, not too heavy, and surfs well, so the Maliko is one I've for my eyes on. It would be handy if it went upwind well also. But possibly the Javelin rather than the Jav Maliko might be better upwind, judging from the noses? Can't have everything in one board, I guess.

It would be great if you test all the new generation of such boards that are around:
Maliko
JL Sidewinder
Vapor Carbon
Falcon 2017
I am sure that I am forgetting a few...
The Blackfish while a great all-around race board doe snot have teh same type of nose, neither I believe is the 2017 AllStar

Cheers,
Luc

Well, I know the Vapor very well, and I was lucky enough to be able to give the Sidewinder a demo in various conditions over several days too (and was impressed). The Maliko and Falcon 2017 are next on my list.

These kinds of hybrid boards are are great development IMO. Unless you want to be at the cutting edge of flat water racing, they just about deliver the most overall fun and performance you can get, I suspect - as long as you aren't a total novice, anyway.

I had forgotten the new JP Race All-water, another candidate....

...and the Mistral Equinox. That's another fascinating board that I was also lucky enough to demo for a couple of weeks, so got to know pretty well. It has a tail outline similar to the Falcon, and a nose like the Ace. Works very well, if your balance is good, and you want a serious all-waters raceboard. I'm surprised we don't hear more about it from those who like the Ace, and dugouts in general because it's a highly effective board at a good price.

These days I have a leash permanently attached to my leg.. 24/7.. so there's no chance of ever forgetting it ever again..
