Just thought I'd show off my personal 9'6" Naish, she's very pretty, and also show my tail pad set up for those that may be interested.

To those of you that have 9'6"'s or are getting them, notice how far back I position my deck grip, the pad is a little long for an optimum setup on this board, so you can either cut a bit off the bottom, or incorperate a surf tail pad like I have here. I used the FCS 3 piece tail pad, and left out the center piece. Feels super sweet and looks pretty sweet too!

Please also note that I leave out the center black strip. This will make the board harder to balance on due to a narrower stance, so only for advanced and smaller riders.

Looks good JB..

I like the way you left out the center strip..and having it recessed more in from the rails will mean less drag when you're cranked way over..

BTW..I stuck grip on my new Naish 11'4" today...and it turned out great..

Here's a few of pics showing how mine turned out.

I decided to keep both boards looking the same..except I took the grip up a little further on the newie to above the vent screw.

The perfect twin boards for taking my daughter (and friends wanting to have a go at SUP) for a paddle.

Yeh i reckon leave the black strip in allows for a wider stance, but everyone has there own thing they like.

I see that JB and DJ are using different types of tail pads. Might you guys compare and contrast em as to why you'd pick one style over the other?

Also: how do you decide where to stick them down? Are they over the center fin or back from the center fin or ???

Thanks!

You use the raised deck grip on the tailpad for jamming your foot against for railing cutbacks just like on a surfboard

For me it's good for a few of things.

First to break up the big area a of grip..and give the big board a more surfboard look..and to also copy the C4 set up that I really like the look of.

The tail pad has a different feel when you step back going for a turn off the tail so you can feel with your foot when you're on it.

The ramp at the end is to also help feel for the most rear position without having to look down..and also reduce the chance of stepping off the tail of the board when stepping back..That can be real nasty..

BTW...There is no need to cut off good grip and do what I've done..and in the future I'll probably just use the grip as it is without cutting it.

My set up would also be a little lighter..but not by much.

Man you've really gone to town on the tail pad setup , I can see some big rooster tails coming off the back of that little beaudy!
Mate I guess because you have been riding the 9'6" longer that any one, I need to ask you, first how much do you weigh with a wettie on and did the fish seem tippy when you first hit the waves . I have only had two surfs on my newy and I really hope that I get accustomed to the livliness when not under power I mean when waiting in the line up this is where I feel the least comfortable , on the wave no problem and even while paddling it isn't too bad, I can turn it on a dime adopting the regular surfing stance side on and I feel I will only get more used to that but while standing around not moving any little ripple seems to want to buck me off so Im thinking in choppy conditions I won't have any down time to relax and chill you know what I mean ? Im sort of wishing that old Robby had made a 9' 8" for the bigger blokes, just a tad bigger all around, cause I love the shape and as I say on the wave its a blast ! Im a windsurfer so Im very determined and won't give up easily I've surfed all my life so Im not a kook ,I guees I need some enlightenment and maybe some encouragement from someone who has been there.

cheers mate hope you can help

Oh yeah I weigh 89kgs but at the mo I'm in a wettie .

I'm sure JB will answer for himself but I do know that he's 90/95kg and I agree it's not real stable while standing around.

But it is more stable than the 10' Bonga and I know a few guys that have got used to that and at first found it very tippy.

I'm about 90kg and rode Phil Triggers 10'x28" last week and also found it a bit tippy while waiting for a set..I guess that's the price you pay for high performance.

There are already 8 boards in the Naish range and I would love to see a meatier version of the 9'6"..Maybe 10'x30".

Hey Toad,

I weight about 95 kg on a good day. I have surfed the 9'6" in Torquay the other week with a 4/3 on, so I guess that would add about 2-3kg at least. We had about 10+ knots of offshore breeze also, and no drama's. I have paddled the 9'6" in winds up to about 20knots, and although it does get a little hard waiting stationary in the chop you get pretty used to how the board moves. I find it second nature now, and feel I could go smaller if I needed to. But the 9'6" is pretty much perfect for me in the fact that I can punch through just about any white water (within reason), Kick turn, and stand completely stationary in the ocean with out falling. So relax (very important in SUP!!), and get in tune with your board, at 89kg, your gonna find the performance of the board far out ways any wobbles your experiencing in your first few session. After a while, you won't even notice that the board is 9'6".

Linter, I used a FCS 3-piece tail pad basicall because it is light, small and cheap, Because I didn't want to use the center piece of the pad. I like riding the 9'6" right back on the tail, and as DJ said you can feel when your on the different grip, so when I feel the different grip I know I'm right back on the tail.

When setting up the pads you have to take some things into consideration. Where you stand while paddling. On Naish boards it is very easy, as Naish have already worked out the central balance point for paddling and market it with a decal, and it is with your left foot just behind the deck decal. so basically you want to have your foot in the middle of the raised rail section on the pad at this point on the board. As for the tail pad, I go as far back as possible, if it wasn't for the leggy plug, I would have gone back further, but I was worried that the leggy would damage my pad (or tear it off). On SUP we have the advantage of being able to project our body weight way off the board with assistance of the paddle producing much more rail pressure and drive, so unlike a surfboard were you can't get these angles efficiently especially in small or powerless surf, we can and in just about any condition, and once you get used to your board and how much you can push yourself off the board with the paddle, you start using a lot more of the board.

But as said above, everything is personal preference, and a wide paddling stance is definetely easier for balance.

regards,

JB

Because the tail section of these boards is quite domed, what I would do is actually fit a tail pad fully and under the tail pad, on the edges glue in some extra foam. The reason for this is that I like a flat surface under the back foot when surfing. Yet again another personal preference to consider.

well Toad i just ordered mine and im 100kg plus i wear a 4x3 so make that about 104, its going to be a challenge, but after spending that much coin it will work even if it near kills me I Find even standing around waiting for waves on the big kalama in side chop and wind can be a challenge, so when its like that i constantly paddle sideways to the shore or in big half arcs ready to turn it when a set comes, i guess i will do the same with the 9 6 " as with anything momentum helps with balance.

Hey Rob,

Dj's boards are an 11'6" and a 11'4" I think.

The weights are not specified in the brochure for the 2009 range, but in 2008 they were as follows,

11'6" 10kg (actually came in a little under)
10'6" 9kg

I would say that the 11'4" would be pretty much smack in the middle of these two at 9.5kg

And the 9'6" is definitely MUCH lighter than the 10'6", but I haven't weighed it yet.

Naish are by far the lightest boards on the market, and also probably the most durable, pretty impressive if you ask me.

Thanks for the info JB. Carried my 11'6" Klama about 1/4 mile for access to a local beach the other day. Just about killed me. The lightness of the Naish and that handle would be a great asset.

Those two boards in my pics are the 11'6" and new 11'4"..The new 11'4" is on the left in this pic.

The Naish boards are very light but those weights that JB quoted must be without grip.

The large area deck grip adds heaps of weight to a board..Well more than you would think it would.

My new 11'4" weights spot on 11kg ..with full deck grip, fins, extra deck plugs and heaps of elbow grease.. ..That's still very light.

Someone should weight their Kalama or Starboard so we can compare weights.

I also read somewhere that Naish have added extra glass in the standing area to help prevent getting compression dents so maybe that's added a little weight.

I've heard that the new Naish boards have more reinforcement in that area now.

I also think using a deck pad would help heaps.

Hey mate, you know it would be interesting to weigh the board straight out of the surf just to see how much that deck pad sucks the water up,I reckon there would be fair bit of difference. Can't wait to try the 11'4" a sleeker version of the
11'6" its amazing how much difference two inches can make in the all over shape your photos side by side really show the difference in thickness through the tail area I wonder where they will go from here in design in a couple of years time we'll probably look at these "old" boards and think that they're dogs (sorry dogman) ? and what is the "Glider"
