I always love getting new toys and this time is really exciting cause it's my first ever 12'6" race board. For the last 3 years I've only ever had from 14' to 17' long race boards which sometimes feel like "just too much board".

I love that I can just carry it the 100 metres I need to hit the water instead of having to use a quiver kaddy. So much easier to manage and store especially in the already crowded garage of toys !!

I'm also loving to just "play" on it, practicing kick turns etc. It's freshened my approach and outlook to training after just doing the long hard yards and miles for the last couple of years. Might even start some "in & out" training for the first time.

Looking forward to getting out there more now and enjoying this wonderful thing we all love to do !! I was so excited to take her (yes it's a her !! ) out for her maiden voyage that I asked a friend to come down and take some pics. So exciting that I wanted to share how stoked I am !!

Looks great Sue ... and you are looking very fit too!

Hey Casso - thanks for your kind comments. Yes I feel I am finally getting there fitness wise. Long way to go though. Gotten off the Dogman diet (no offense Doggy), slowed up on the Oliver liquids (no offense Oliver) and finally got two kids off to school so finally have some time (when the sun's up) to do some training.

I haven't put the monster paint on yet. I only got this board 2 days ago so I have wax on there at the moment. I know you get it from Hobie here in Australia so I will contact them and make some inquiries. I've heard how good it is and how much of a big difference it makes.

Still waiting for that "surfing a race board" lesson you owe me from 2 years ago. The only 3 other times I've been on a 12'6" were the day of the Noosa races the last 2 years and the California BOP 2 years ago and you know how that ended each time !! Next time you're up I'm going to book you in.

Boylos - Wuz Sup ? Yes it's been a very long time since I've posted here. And I've been practicing my "paper, rock, scissors" which is usually how Danny & I decide who races and who looks after the kids so hopefully I may win soon and be the one to race again !! And yes this is my first Hobie. It's the narrower 12'6" Elite Race. I love it !!

Piros - Yes I've been doing a bit since the kids started school. Nothing like Darren Obah yelling at you and calling you an Old Bag to motivate you !! If things go to plan Danny & I will be in Hawaii for some races in June/July so he won't be here for the Qld Titles on 9-10 July. Give Wazza a chance!!

And finally DJ - Yes she is a beautiful board. I'm stoked ! Actually did a 14km downwind yesterday on her and beat my old time by 9 mins. So maybe it's true what they say "bigger isn't always better" My real goal in SUP is to just make one page of your "Sexy Girl SUP Pics" thread !! Do you include the "mature aged" females ??

RE:Darren Obah I recall was very, very handy with the gloves in mid 90's. Did he fight Mundine very late in his career ? I recall he did'nt reach his potential as a boxer. Should have taken the trip to Sydney early in his career.

Hey Lacey. I'm going to look into the Monster Paint as I've heard it's fantastic and doesn't weigh as much as a wet deck pad and kick tail pad.

i actually cut strips out of my grips to lighten the board up and last time sprayed some monster grip inbetween.

the hobie i had a quick paddle on tues morning had monster grip. i almost s### myself when i stepped back your on the right track- if you didn't like it you can always put some strips and bits and pieces of grip around the back if you care too. let us know how you go

Ha ha. Funny guy. I still get in an outrigger every now and then but usually only when it involves a plane trip, a tropical island and a pina colada these days !! Look forward to catching up again soon.

I sold my 16' over a year ago DJ and I've had a 17' since then. Shows how long it's been since I posted on here hey? Dale produces a very good quality custom board. The thing I have found doing alot of downwinds is that alot of the time in our ocean conditions a 17' is too much board for me. Especially when trying to pull onto runs. I had it in my mind that longer was faster out there but yesterday on the 12'6" I was actually catching more runs, easier, stepping back better (cause it's not as far back to go). I could control the board more and was fatigued less.

At one point I thought to myself out there that it felt like the "power to weight ratio" was more suited. Not sure if that makes sense?? It just felt easier for me and my overall time surprised me.

I always thought that 12'6" were more suited for your BOP style of races but I'm now thinking they are a good overall board that you can have fun on in all kinds of conditions and places. I actually can't wait to go play in the river mouth on it and to learn a whole new part of all this. Getting a 17' in and out has always scared the daylights out of me !!

Aren't they a great board Sue? I paddled one in the Bridge to Beach on Sydney Harbour last month - great board. I had some issues staying on it in the heavy side chop, but that was more me than the board!

Monster Paint Traction is the way to go! It doesn't hold water like a deck pad and grips better than wax. Hobie Australasia import it from Jim Davis in California so Hobie Sunstate should stock it.

hi sue

i sprayed the tail section of my 12'6 with the monster paint traction

its hard core abrasive at first but wears in with use

my effort was not as "smicko" as the 14' board i got which was already sprayed at the factory by the boys

Hi Sue
You went with the Hobie 12'6 Race but I know you have paddled both the 12'6 Hobie race boards and I know Danny has gone with the Elite.
What is your opinion on the extra width of the Elite as opposed to the Race. The Elite is more for the 85kg plus person but did you as a light weight find much difference with the extra width in performance, speed etc ?

Hey Gords,

Great question and one that I've been asked several times this week via PM. Danny & I finally had a chance to compare the two boards side by side this morning in both flat water and in the ocean. We had a very accurate "GPS Speedometer" on board. Here's what we found.

1. In the flat water both of us were able to get the narrower Race up to a faster max speed by about 0.5km/hr.

2. I found the Race more managable when doing kick turns and continual circles and felt I had more control of this board which is about 2cm wider at the tail than the Elite. I'd say they have made the tail slightly wider on the Race to compensate for the 1 inch narrower it is in the middle...to keep the stability.

3. Danny is 100kg's and sunk the Race too much. When on the Elite the board was 1 inch higher out of the water. This is because the Elite has more volume and is made for the heavier rider (over 85kg's).

4. I found the Race easier to pull onto and catch runs in the open ocean.

The guys from Hobie who designed these boards have made them to best suit the two different weight categories ie. the Race is for 85kg's and under and the Elite for over 85kg's. I think that is the best way to explain which board is best for which rider and that is exactly the way they intended them to be. I would recommend people stick to the board that is best suited to their weight as that's exactly why Hobie designed two different boards.

The only change to this may be rider ability where a lighter weight paddler whose's balance or ability may not be high may prefer and be more confident on the wider Elite. And the more confident you are on your board the better it will work for you in all conditions and situations.

Hope this helps everyone who has asked me this week.
