Just got back home after the 35 km 2nd leg from Maliko to Honalua Bay and I'm glad it's over.

Wind was a lightish at around 15 knots from the side and a little behind for the first half but slowly turned to come from behind us for the rest. Glad to do it as it's a good race for Aussies who are used to that sort of thing but doing 2 Maliko's a day in 20-30 knots is far more fun.

Anyway, result to be confirmed but this is what I know at the moment.
1st Conner. Bullet
2nd Some really fast dude on some really fast board. Not sure of his name.
3rd Livio. Bullet. Super close between the first 3. Only about a minute according to Dave K.
4th Bart. Bullet.
5th Andy Davies. Naish 17. Yeeww.
6th Sam Parker. Naish 17.
7th Robert Teritehau. F18. Former legend windsurfer.
8th Mark Raaphorst. Bullet.
9th Jeremy Riggs. Bullet.
10th Junyah on his F20. Beast of a board.

Fly home tomorrow.

Sam.

Nice one Sam, hows Robert T doing it on an F18 in 20 to 30 knots, did he ever fall?
NSW, 1613 posts
11 Jul 2011 2:34pm
Sorry I was a bit unclear about todays windstrength as we only got around 15 ish at best. 20-30 was every other days doing Maliko's.

Robert still looks fit and healthy and was paddling Scott Trudon beast. Didn't see him fall but I think everyone had a couple of falls. Kind of needed to as it was a hot day without much of the usual cooling winds.

Congratulations Andy and Sam, some great results in trying conditions. You know it's going to be rough out there when in the pre-race briefing they say a tourist was missing after being washed of the rocks on west Maui the day before and if we see anything whilst paddling we should contact the coastguard!

DJ - I think Andy has been paddling the black nose Naish 17 since getting here - I couldn't see any differences between it and the older models except for the new spray.

Angie - Yep Andrea won the womens about 10 minutes ahead of Devin Blish and Sky Robbins a close 3rd overall (but Sky entered open class not elite so was awarded 1st in that).

Conner's winning time was about 3hr25min and I think Andrea was 15th overall in 4hr15min.

At 5hr5min I was happy just to cross the finish line! Unlike the boys who were a fair way ahead of me, by the time i got to the 'downwind' part of the course the wind had almost died completely and just had to slog it out for the last few miles through to the finish.

Definately the most challenging race I've done, i thought it felt tougher than the first 50km of the crossing last year and many of the local guys here agreed.

hi ali. have you decided on a board for the big one?

cheers
ps well done on the two races

Yep, I'm using my new (2nd hand) f14, but leaving the rudder in and paddling the unlimited class not the stock class. After training on a 12'6 all year the Naish 17 just felt like too much board for me and the f14 is much easier for me to paddle and manoeuvre between the bumps. The f14 may not have the same top speed as the 16 and 17ft boards but I'd rather be on something I'm comfortable paddling than a bigger board that i struggle to get moving between the bumps.

Sam, Andy and Ali did an awesome job and earnt some serious respect from the locals. Sam and Andy both managed to mow down some big names in the second half of the race. I watched from the headland (didn't race due to injury) as they paddled strongly into Honolua Bay (Andy playing air guitar with his paddle to anyone who pointed a camera at him - weird aussies ). Really proud to see them match it with the big guns of the sport!

Hey Dan. Just wrist tendenitis from doing too many maliko runs - lost count of how many we did - often we would just finish one and load our boards straight on the shuttle for the next one. Race 2 was over 3 hours so there was no chance of me doing that one. For the record, in the 2 weeks we were over there, the tradewinds pumped every day. The worst day would of been equivalent to a great day back at home.

Alii Cat is a tough cookie. She did 2 maliko runs the other day with some of my friends and never slowed. She also did 2 Malikos again today. Not sure how many she has done in total but that is huge. Most mortals male or female wouldn't do 1/3 she is doing. Great job and maybe well see you tomorrow.

Aloha
