Matt Lumley has bounced back from injury to come second in the Corona Classic last week in Merimbula and today he won the first COREBAN Great Melbourne Paddle race.

Congrats Matt.. and bad luck Cam and Woogie for missed a mark giving them a slight advantage and cutting the course.. I think Cam and Woogie were so tied up in an epic battle between them they weren't watching where they were going.

What a great day.. What great conditions.. What a great turn up.. and thanks to all those who helped on the day.. Also thanks to Coreban, SHQ, RPS and the many other sponsors.

We had about 100 paddlers and less than 5 knots of wind for the whole event.. Also congrats to Linda being the first female.. Awesome effort.. Pics and vids soon.

Yep, mental day!

Well done to the paddlers that tackled the 8km. In no wind it was all man power!
Also congrats to the first time paddlers & beginners for completing the short course.

Big thanks to all the sponsors, Keysy and Jonathan for supplying and manning the support boats, the girls that ran the BBQ,
Dave, Paul and the SUP Vic team for putting it all together and everyone that came down and took part.

Next year is going to be a ripper!

This year was a ripper !! Well done everyone. Organisers, competitors, and participants!

Pictures (or it didn't happen!) please !!

There was prizes and gifts for all. Even the lucky dip Corban Bamboo/Wood/Timber board went to a very very happy boy (who is new to SUP, and dead keen, and does not own a paddle or board) ! It was technically dad who won it, but it was going to be the boy's board, plus paddle, and accessories. His mum wanted to give the booties back to the prize pool (previous prize), as she thought they had done too well for the day !!

Well done Lummers, to win you have to paddle around all the markers which is what you did and I didn't so great effort,

was fun paddling back and forth alongside Woogie too, think I'll have to work on those kick turns and a few other tips he gave me after the race,

Cheers.

Well done Matt, great effort.

What a race the top guys put on!

I was back in the pack, but from what I could see (and I've also seen all of Mike's photos taken from the boat), it looked like an epic battle out the front between Cam and Woogie.

Great paddle Cam to withstand the pressure and pull clear from Woogie at the end. Pity you went the wrong side of that mark, otherwise I figure the trophy and the $500 would have been in your pocket.

Sorry about being parochial, but it's really good to see a local Melbourne paddler mixing it with the best in the country!

Thanks.. I better fix my post before anyone sees it..

btw.. You also put in an awesome effort..

That's one of the longest 8 klms that I've ever paddled.

It makes our 10 klm DW'ers seem like a walk in the park.

This course I mapped out was 3.8km, x 2 laps.... So, pretty much 8 km. The inshore course is accurate, the outer portion of the course is a guestimate. But the even when you trace the outer points quite wide, you only get 4.0km.....

This second course is 4.0km, but the above course is a better reflection. But yes, the below course does look like more than 200m extra, but trust me, it's not. And actually, the above course is a shade under 3.8km.

So, by hook or by crook, we seemed to have had an 8km course.

The slightly controversial "short course" shaved about 120m - 180m off 1 lap, assuming they went around the "decoy yellow marker" (the marker close to the timber pylon at Groyne 3 on the southern end, down near Sandringham Marina), and depending on where you place the northern out-to-sea marker (or google maps measurement point).

Well done to all the SUP vic committee for putting on such a slick event, not to mention all the sponsors and the winners, a huge amount of effort put in and really appreciated by all those that participated in the events. 8 k's later I'm pleasantly stuffed

Yeah the course when first mapped on GPS was something like 3970m per lap but with the start bouy
slightly closer to the beach today it would have almost been spot on 4km per lap.

Lumers was paddling very fast! Awesome effort!
Bummer about Cam & Woogie, would have been great to see the 3 guys battle it out all the way.

The 2 best performances on the day for me where Andrew Hocking coming in right on Lumers heels
and Linda's effort to beat Rea across the line.

...and of course the 6 year olds that did the 2km paddle was amazing. Especially the little guy that
fell over on the run to the finish line, got up with a face full of sand and a big smile!
