Not that good at judging distance, but anyone on a paddle board 400 metres offshore will be forced to wear a life jacket pfd etc .As of yesterday $160 if you are "apprehended" after the 12 month "warning" period. As I said not that good at distance ,how far off shore is U turns,or Seaford reef?
Welcome all ,our new numberplates SA "the nanny state".

Is it only SA and how about the other state.
I guess its safety 1st or just be cool not to have PFD or because its too hot.

Hi Waxer,
The Port Noarlunga Jetty is 330m long and about 30m is over sand.... so i would say another 100m from the end of the jetty. Its a fair way out!

We lucky here......if you have wetsuit and legrope.....and a self paddled craft.......all good within a direct line from young nicks head to tuahine island

It's the same in VIC unless you are in a surf zone.

Does it mean you must be wearing a 'solid' PFD or can you still go with a waistbelt PFD?

In Tassie you need a pfd at all times unless in the surf zone, bum bag is ok, you also need a legrope at all times.

So I can swim further than 400m offshore and don't require any floatation aids but need to have a PFD when on a foam filled board. Makes a whole lot of sense. Not...

The new laws apply to boats as well, except that you are required to be wearing a jacket at all times if the craft is under 4.8 metres. So I go for a dive from my 3.8metre inflatable.I wear my lifejacket out the spot, take it off ,don my gear and do my dive or snorkel. On returning to the boat, I by law have to put my lifejacket back on in case I happen to fall overboard, haven't I just returned from being overboard without it on.
As some one else has noted when on the sup I am attached to my flotation device. We all know the risks ,and we assess and manage them.Honestly what is next compulsory shark shields, helmets, epirbs.
Are the pollies really worried about our lives or more realistically the cost of search and rescue.I for one would waive that right.

I think the pollies are more worried about the revenue the "fines" will raise.
We have 1 or 2 fisheries officers to patrol the whole of our metro coastline.
Who is going to enforce and hand out the fines????

More Nanny State nonsense.

What happened to being responsible for yourself and your actions.

Yes I understand that not all people are fit and healthy and capable and blah blah blah, but if your are not what are you doing in the ocean anyway.

To my knowledge, no such nonsense in QLD.
