In their infinite wisdom, Surfing Australia has only provided one allocation for Victorian women in the surfing at nationals. With Kristi and Emma Webb going head-to-head in Victoria, someone is going to be disappointed.

Interesting to see that Surfing Australia haven't increased the numbers in the women's surfing this year, despite increasing the over 40 division and opening an over 50's as well - both seemingly have more numbers than the women's. I thought that they would have given more consideration to the womens and at least see a field of 12-16 at Aussies, especially if its going to be a stand alone sup event this year.
Would be great to see both Kristi and Emma get the chance to compete again, however with only one spot for Victoria and a single Surfing Australia wildcard spot it may be unlikely. And if the wildcard goes to whoever from Victoria misses out again then they will end up with equal numbers to NSW and QLD which isn't exactly fair when these states have at least twice as many girls who also surf very well and are vying for places on the team.
No easy way to spilt it when there's still only 8 spots up for grabs!
BTW Great pics Kristi!
Hi Ally 8 positions for the women's is just plain insulting! The current allocation for the states will always stack the deck in favour of NSW and Queensland its been this way for years.
The way the numbers and allocation works out also does not make any sense, who cares how many short boarders came where etc etc this is SUP. We are trying to grow the sport and they forget 50% of the market is female.
Is it really that big a deal to have 4 or 8 more positions in the women's especially when its run as a stand alone event. What would that mean 3 hours additional time in heats.
When you have competitors that bust their asses to travel all over the country and in your case Ali over seas etc do you try to motivate them to compete or do you motivate them to move to other sports?
At this point there might be 20 really good women's competitors in Aussie get them all to nationals I say and show case what you girls can do.
Its hard enough to get girls dedicated to SUP in the first place.
Surfing Australia needs to take a leaf out of Surfing NSW book and encourage as many people to come to an event as is credible.
The current competition situation is very short sighted and we wonder why girls leave the sport!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
