I've honestly been saying it for a couple of years.
This is why: He seems to be very mathematical in his thinking. He knows exactly how many heats he has won, how many events, points, possible positions of his competitors.
A while ago he surpassed Curren as the most victories ever. He already has youngest ever world champ, oldest ever world champ, most heat wins, most event wins, most consecutive world titles, most world titles. Remember also the 10million charity promise, to get 10 titles in '10 and the most ever perfect 10's and donate 10 million to charity would just about see the prophecy come true.
He could then retire and Burton could use all of the promo of him riding his own boards to launch CI Surfboards designed by Kelly Slater and allow Al Merrick to retire. That;s my thoughts.
A year ago I was saying noway,but this year has been a little different with injuries and a lot of guys stepping up which has helped spread the points. Yes I think he can do it 10K, is that rumour true that Quiksilvers bonus to Kelly is 10 million for 10 titles![]()
He should pull his finger out and compete in more Triple Crown Events. Lately he's only been doing Pipe. But the other boys probably appreciate that !!http://www.triplecrownofsurfing.com/vtcs10/past-champions.php
Events to come;
Trestles - a favorite of Kelly's
France & Portugal - never a problem (seemed to have dropped Munducca this year)
Puerto Rico - a Search Event, anything goes, but Kelly is exceptional at surfing anywhere
Pipe - usually Backdoor opens up for Kelly, and he owns it....
The contenders;
Jordy is dangerous this year, but Kelly's experience combats that...
Dane, Taj, Adriano, Mick, and Andy need to pull their fingers out and get winning.... Parko had an injury hiccup...
Conclusion;
10 is there for the taking.
yeah well i totally agree. I would love to see him win again. Would have to put him right at the top of best ever sportsman ever - although without the normal issues that surround those types of titles....i think he is incredible and still the one for me that makes things happen in the water. I was out at Bungan beach a little while back and he paddled out. It was abt 4ft and mostly closing out. Within abt 30 mins most of the lineup was on the beach watching him tear it apart. He rips in real life. Surfs so fast its scary.
Jordy looks good. But lets be real Slater has dominated this sport for a long long time and still holds it over most if not all the others. Still. And to top it off he keeps getting better. And then just to make it a little more interesting he rides his own boards now. Back to the past as previous champions have done. I am surprised he does not have the biggest head in the world. Cheer up Lance, Michael J, Michael S, Tiger, Roger etc This bloke is the one.
and why not. the only guy you cannot discount to win a heat, even if he has been combo-ed. if you think about what he has done, it's hard to get your head around it- the bradman of surfing, never to be matched again
I think I forgot to mention that if Kelly really wants to win this year and is motivated to he will. He is that far ahead whenever he feels like it.
yes i totally agree he is really a step above
did you guys see the 10 pointer in chops amazing stuff he fell off!
And yes in real life to watch the guy first hand is crazy how good he really is i think hes not human?
From Steve Sheerer on Swellnet ( always a great read when the comps are on);
This remains the greatest competitive advantage of Slater: his ability to adapt and respond to the changing reality of the ocean during a thirty minute heat.
It calls to mind the operational method of legendary test Pilot Chuck Yeager, described so memorably in Tom Wolfe's book The Right Stuff. "If Plan A didn't work then it was time to try Plan B and so on and so forth until you found something that worked." I'm paraphrasing, but you get the drift. If Owen is to become a legit title contender he needs to expand his strategic repertoire. EOS.
Kelly uses the slow strangulation method against Melling, applying relentless pressure until the final death blow was delivered. In a real sense he never got out of a canter. Your correspondent got to talk with Slater after the heat. I was thinking it might be the last chance to get an audience with the champ if he continued his run. The last time I spoke to him was at Bells after a similar Rd 4 win. He went on to win that contest.
There's a peculiar charm and remote intensity about Slater up close. He's there, intensely present for the conversation, and yet you are acutely aware that at any point he could brush you off with a royal haughtiness. People in the media find this combination unsettling and opinion is divided as to how they respond to the Slater schtick.
He is candid with your correspondent, explaining the lessons he learned from last years board experimentation, which he has now repackaged into a more aesthetically acceptable form, whilst still enjoying the benefits of his small board revolution. Lessons learned largely from the tow-surfing realm.
He explained also, how a disappointing year like last year acts like a protracted retensioning of the bow of his competitive instinct, drawing it back to a point where the arrow of his career arc can reach further and further. I can pass on the fact that in the break he completely redesigned his quiver, changing outlines and rocker and experimenting with all tail shapes while maintaining the low volume paradigm.
He has increased rocker through the whole board, increasing concave concomitantly. He is riding the best boards of his career. Fact. For his event defining ten-point ride heat against Ace he rode a small McKee set-up quad, a board we detailed in an earlier post. We'll come back to this ride in a minute.
As a parting shot he carefully dissects the line-up, wave rhythm and strategic options: "You gotta pay attention".
Word, holmes.
Kelly's ten was shocking. Devastatingly similar to his layback to barrell 20 point heat which still stands as a high water mark in Pro Surfing history. It was wave that very few Pros would have even attempted, let alone made. As a statement of both intent and luck, synchronicity, intuition: call it what you will it established his credentials as a Primary Cause in this event.
Excellent article Simon, interesting point about his new quiver - "lower volume paradigm and more rocker/concave" - which is the direction SUP design needs to go IMO.
here's something. the number of times a local goldie lad, rookie or seasoned pro at the top of his game,is on a roll and comes up against slater.slater gets waves that seem to bend to his will and goes berserk while our local boy ends up looking like a punter at saturday morning d-bar
cheers
Well, Slater won Trestles, one of his favorite waves....
He's historically done pretty well in Europe in the past....
He's always a stand out in Hawaii....
I think the bookies would have him at $1.40 or less for 10 in 2010.
There was some amazing surfing in that contest. I think its fair to say that 10 in 2010 is the magical number also.
Did u see that air that Owen Wright pulled off on that left? Unreal. He is going to be a contender one day I reckon. Surfs unreal.
Jordy was going nuts early on he pulled sick reverse and then backed it up with a supermna on the same wave. Kelly's surfing is mindbending he has the best bottom turn in the business........
yes its like the Kelly , Jordy and dane show truely amazing surfing
i agree tux jordys wave was epic how was that not a 10?
