Is it legal to SUP from say Ivanhoe east to the CBD via the Yarra river?

I think my friend did kayak in the route mention above though.

Why couldn't you SUP in a river? No one owns rivers.

Isn't that like saying, can you surf at Bells Beach? Or are there different rules down south?

I live in Ivanhoe and have SUP'd every part of the Yarra from Burke Rd bridge in East Ivanhoe through to the city. You will find a couple spots blocking your pathway such as Dights Falls, so that's up to a 500 metre portage depending on what board you are using and how much punishment it can take. Also, the delta of Darebin Creek and the river is possibly going to be too shallow to pass, but you can walk your board about 30 metres and you're fine after that.

I have never seen any land manager / authority on the water upstream of Dights Falls so even if there were any regulations to enforce (there aren't) you won't bump into any water police or Parks Victoria officers anyway.

Having said that, you might find around the boat sheds near Princes Bridge (opposite Federation Square) that Parks Victoria officers may expect you to be wearing a PFD. This is because they don't understand Marine Safety Victoria regulations correctly. We do not have to wear a PFD in enclosed waters as long as we are within 400 metres of shore. I don't need to tell you that at no point on the Yarra are you ever more than 30 metres from shore.

worst is all the toff rowers (put in nicest way possible) around swanston st bridge who think they own the water, love yelling at you and thinking they have more rights to the water than anyone else. Sadly they give any good rowers a bad name.

Lol, my now step daughter is one of those rowers and that is exactly their attitude to Sup on the Yarra. I suggested doing it once and was told I would be an inconvenience to rowers and should not do it because it puts them off!
The Banks rowers should be ok they are the Drinking Beer club and seem a bit chilled but when the girls schools get in they are less aware of the world as we know it,lol.
if the boats are heading your way just keep to the banks a bit more or carry a megaphone to warn them off.

Thanks for the tips and info, much appreciated, I will definite use good sense for interest of safety of myself and others of course, and do a good homework before get in. Your advice regarding what needs to be looked out are really helpful. I had a few runs from the Burke RD bridge towards Southbank and the river look soooo tempting.
