My Laguna's rails are pretty low profile but it just has a rolled deck. I actually think this is less unstable in bumpy conditions as the chop is not bouncing off the fat rails.
I reckon the theory of fat rails = stability is somewhat flawed.
Jim at tropical blends spoke about this theory of a step deck being really stable if the rails are under water as the 'weight' of the water on top of the rail holds it down. Less bounce as Goatie said.
I feel like extreme rocker on my 9 9 may help stability as well with the tail and nose out of the water and the centre under water. Seems really stable might be a similar principle or it could be my imagination :-)
