I've got quite a few.. IMO the best brand is Camelbak for sure.. I've been using them for years Mt Biking, windsurfing and even snowboarding.

I think the best type for paddling is the waist (bum-bag) style.. I've got one of these.. The only problem with them is they don't hold much.

For longer paddles you need at least 2lts and I use one a bit like this.

www.camelbak.com/~/media/Products/Current/REC%20Hydration%20Packs/2010/Annadel/rec-packs-annadel-black-s10-large-72.ashx?bc=White&as=0&dmc=0&h=340&thn=0&w=270

If you use a shoulder/back type make sure you get the chest strap that goes across between the two arm straps.

My PFD also has a pouch in the back to hold a bladder.

I recomend using a light mix of lemon cordial rather than water and then you wont get any mold growing in the bladder or tube.

I'm using my bum-bag style Camelbak in this pic.

You can have these made to oder or off the rack, You can ask to have more pockets or less.

Seventh wave will do what ever custom job or alterations you want

kole gear make a pressurised bum bag style hydration system it is awsome. bite on the mouth piece and water squirts into your mouth it holds 1.7L.The last thing i would want is a pack on my back while im paddling it feel horrible.Even Dave Kalama was using one in Hawaii recently.

Andy Wheatley (Paddle Shop Australia) is the Australian agent for Kole Gear water systems, invented and made by a great mate of ours and incredible paddler Steve Cole of Kauai. Andy also a Kialoa and Quickblade Paddle agent.

Andy's website is www.paddleshop.com.au/

Dave Kalama also discusses hydration on his site. He had a personal preference for bottles on a belt, but that may have since changed (???).

I now make an effort to slug some water before any surf or SUP session. 10 to 25 minutes prior works for me. I don't do any reading about fitness training so I am not sure what is ideal. But I remember hearing that even many afl players arrive to game day slightly under hydrated even though they are drilled about what to do, etc....

I gave up on hydration packs. The water tastes horrible and it's tiring sucking on that hose.

I followed Kalama to the water bottle waist pack. It tastes so much better and I can just grab any bottled water and stuff it in the pack and go.

I use the Osprey. There is a bungee loop you pull over the top of the bottle that keeps it in place, even when a wave takes you out. It's easy to flip the bungee off and take a drink while standing. I'm not racing with it, just downwinding for fun.
