When we got the Hobie for a demo it didnt have a grip on it so we told Richard we were happy to grip it up, then Kristi and I got to thinking about how many times we had been asked how do you get the hande cut out right etc.

Sorry about the reflection off the top of the head but it was the best place to put the camera.

We sped up the footage a little to condense the time.

Thanks Phill.. Great job with the deck grip how to vid.. That's how I would have done it but most people wouldn't know who've never done it before.. I like your vid more than the old C4 vid that was also a goodie.. btw.. I think I could see a reflection of myself in the back of your head.. Just kidding Phill..

Here are a few more tips that I have also found useful-

If your board doesn't have a pin line, Builders chalk line, or a piece of string (held in place with masking tape) is an easy way to mark the centre line.

If you have large pieces of grip, flip it over and very lightly cut out a 2" strip of the backing paper down the middle of the grip. Remove only this 2" strip of backing paper, place the grip in place (it is now very easy to move around) and then peel of the sides one side at a time.

If you are really handy and have a router lying around, it is a very easy way to get a 'good as new' finish around your handle after the grip has been put down. No measuring required - the well itself acts as a jig.



The nice thing about gripping your own board is that you can customise it with some different colours.



If you do get bubbles after grip has been put down, prick the centre with a blade point and remove the air through the pin hole.

Our router bit is still going after about 120 boards! Just move it up or down when it gets dull. Makes a mess so have a Vac on hand to suck up all the dregs - most ends up in the well. Nice!

Nice video Phil and agree with the comments about the relationship with your
kids, it takes some work but is paid back 1000 times over. I did a weekend knife making course with my son a couple of years ago and we have spent many hours in the shed with the oxy and the anvil making all sorts of terrifying things since then. Trouble is now that no trailer is safe, we use rusty old leaf springs and turn them into extremely sharp works of art, takes a long long time and much patience to hammer them into shape, then polish and finally go through the whole heat treating process then make the handles. Sure beats XBox.





The other thing I'm impressed with is that head stubble, with your usual close shave I thought you were much further gone than that.....respect
