The Proudly Sponsored Honolua Race is on for Saturday 12th June. This is the best run Downwind Event in Australia this race is in its eight year running. Organised by Surfing Queensland. The race is 9kms long from Snapper Rocks to inside Currumbin Alley Estuary. In 2009 there was 70 competitors with 11 Open unlimited SUP's and 13 over 40's unlimited SUP's. & 6 Girl SUP's. This year I hope we triple the unlimited entrants. The entry form should be up on the Surfing Queensland web site by next week. Or you can ring SQ 07-55201165 surfingaustralia.com/SurfingQueensland
Hope to see you all there

Thanks for posting this Phil,

Yes, this is a really nice downwind race and if we get the right Southerly conditions its a classic.

I would strongly encourage all of you intersate DW enthusiasts to mark this one in your calendar and give it a go. If you need gear you might be able to sweet talk your way into borrowing a board. Please email me if you need help and I will see what I can find for you.

Most of the locals will be there. It's only a short race but its a good one. The prize giving is also great and usually its a great social get together.

My money is on Travis, if he competes.

I've just found out the BOP on Oahu is on the same weekend the Honolua Race is on so Billy + Travis may not be at the Honolua Race???? Leaving a Big door open for the Open Unlimited SUP'ers to challenge Paul Jackson!!!

Phil, you should do well in the unlimited category with all of that training you are doing. Then there is also the dark horse Peasey, on his custom "Secret Agent", who should do well in the 12'6 mens. What about the ladies - Jenny could be up there

Mikeman I like the fact that more people are getting into Unlimited SUP Downwind Paddling = more people that can challenge you = more BULKFUN it is. Its a real buzz when conditions are right & you're just surfing out there. I beleive this year will see the biggest ever SUP entrants the Honolua Race has ever seen!!!

I spoke with Wes Burg he lives across the road, he is a ex Uncle Tobys Ironman WEAPON he's coaching Joel Parkinson at the moment we spoke about the 2012 Molokai race for when I turn 50yo so I need to start training now 2 years preparation so my body will be in fine form???

The next SUPSA round will be a distance paddle on Currumbin Creek, following which our own Mikeman and Lacey will run an "Introduction to Downwinders". This will be more a tips session for those thinking of doing the Honolua Race rather than an instructional session. Check the SUPSA website for details.

Yep should be good number of girls in this years race. I know of 6 girls already & there's been some serious training going on, it's great to see. I hope they make a 14ft class in a way as there are a large number of paddlers with 14ft boards at the moment.
Last years female was unlimited class only. Lets hope they dont start to early again and wait for it to go SE.

Big group heading from Kingscliff back to Currumbin now, 20knots ++ !!! WWOOHH.

Thanks Jodie, will try to get to at least one of these. I would kill to know how to effectively get a 17 footer off (and back on to) an open beach in waves bigger than 4ft without risking snappage. Anyone else figured this one out???

Unfortunately Jed you’ve got no chance of getting a 17fter through the break even at 3ft its a nightmare (imposable) you need a seaway channel to make it out the back! Coming in well I’ve done it at 6ft+ make shore your timing is right or you’re f###ed wait for a lull then paddle your a##e of take leg rope off & let the white water take 17fter to the beach you then have to swim in from 200+ metres out. That way the chances of braking your 17fter is nil with a bit of luck. Enjoy.

G'day Mikeman
I'm not really Training Mikeman its called having bulk fun yes when ever the wind is up & the surf is s##t I always go for a 10-20km Downwind Paddle as I enjoy surfing the ocean swells & the fitness that comes with it. To me its ALL TIME wish I had maliko in my backyard as I've got Burleigh Heads in my frontyard!

hi, we all came in at southport on monday. i was on the longest board, got to the break, looked a bit mean, i/2 caught one and jumped of and let it drag me out of the danger/ impact zone. got back on the tail and belly boarded it in. not pretty, but gets the board in one piece. the other guys who are better at surfing those long beasts even did the same
cheers

Be careful with that technique. That is exactly how I snapped the 16 in two. The jump-off can see your board go over the falls while you stay behind, dragging the board back so it hangs in the lip. Danger, Will Robinson.

yeah, i know what you mean. but hey, it's always a risk, scares me. jed you probably know this, i will let a set go through so there is more water over the sand bank. where you come in down there wouldn't thrill me at all
cheers
ps i factor in tide times if i can hoping it might be a bit less dodgy

Yep. It's going to be interesting for visitors trying to get in if there's any swell for Trevor's Saltwater Fest next week. Could be some thrills AND spills.

And a tip for the 10k and 30k racers if it's a south-north run - be ready for the backwash coming off Caba headland as you go around it. It'll put you in the water if you're not on your game. I have a method but sorry not sharing as may be my only chance to overtake from back of the field.
