Hey guys,

I just finished glassing my fiberglass SUP (still have to paint it) and it turned out great! Only problem I'm having is it won't stay straight when paddling. I currently have a single 9" carbon fiber fin on it that I made. I was thinking about making two more smaller ones and going with the thruster setup.

Any advice?
Also the board is 8.5' long 33'' wide, its fairly flat with a very small rocker.

Don't mean to be rude.. but.. if Fred Flintstone had a sup board that would be it.. I know someone who once made their first board.. He called that board Mr Lumpy.. Your board reminds me of that board..

You might find that the paddling straight thing is often more a technique thing rather than a fin thing.

Try standing slightly more forward so the tail is just starting to lift from the surface of the water.. Try taking shorter paddle strokes and don't bring the paddle much past your feet.. and try putting more weight on the same rail side that you are paddling on.

If this fails you need to remove your fin and put in normal fin box so you can try different fins till you find one that works.. Adding side fins might help.

Just checking.. It's not April the 1st is it?.. .. Do you have a pic of your paddle? .. I can just imagine what it's like..

Thanks for the advice ill try to change up my paddle stroke and see if that helps before I put in more fins.

Haha yeah Mr. Lumpy would be a great name for this board, it was most defiantly a learning experience.

here's a picture of the paddle I think you'll get a kick out of it! What I did was extend a wooden paddle with a wooden stick then used Kevlar to attach it.

Good stuff mate, looks like a good first off board. Interesting you used extruded polystyrene instead of expanded. Some people seem to have trouble with XPS. I've used it before and found it good to shape.

I found this site really useful when I built my first couple.www.surfersteve.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi

Have you surfed it yet? I reckon it'd be pretty fast with the flat rocker.

Somewhere on this site is a really good tutorial by surfcoast SUP guru Dean Snow. The guy makes great boards with a very simple technique. It is a great instructional story.

DJ, do you know if it still exists?

I've only taken it out on flat water because I live on a lake. And I've actually never surfed before. Shaping this foam was difficult and next time I'll try something more specific to surfing rather than insulation from Home Depot lol .

Too bad I couldn't have seen that tutorial before I made this board some great techniques there that will help me with my next one! Ill post some more pictures soon when I sand it down and paint it.

I also have a lot of 8 oz S glass left over so I plan on modifying the paddle to make it wider at the bottom.

The problem with XPS is getting a good glass bond to it , because its closed cell there is no resin penetration unlike EPS which MUCH gives more grip , S glass is great stuff and I'm surprised it isn't sold more in Australia

^^^ Nup - it still doesn't.

You don't need our endorsement to have fun on your 'custom' SUP, but maybe the following pic might explain it somewhat-

I see the problem, you just haven't sanded enough off the trailing edge of your fin (needs to look like aircraft wing or even a real fin).
seriously you need to go into production on these things

a good way to start is to use a thing called a template which will give you a nice curved even outline, sorry but it looks like you cut this outline with an axe. BUT, we have to start some where. i can recall getting absolutly flogged for my attemt at a pigment job on the old shane standard as a grommet.

Well this board may seem like junk to you guys because y'all are seasoned surfers who are on nice expensive boards. Me on the other hand have never surfed in my life and I'm just trying to shred some waves for the first time. And honestly for spending less than 150 bucks this thing and its good enough.

I dont know when I'll build my next board but it will look a lot better since I have all these nice tutorials y'all have nicely given me

Oh yeah and I spent 2 hours on the lake on the caveman board and it was the most relaxing 2 hours I've had in a long time!!

Good onya, Too many people on this site are so precious about their brands. This is how boards looked years ago. And by the way there's plenty of enjoyment in learning. My first board was pure **** but I think I've learnt a bit more about surfing and design by doing it myself.

J13urton, just get some baby poo yellow paint, get a marker pen and write N-A-I-S-H on it and the brand guys on here will want to buy it off you!
