Has anyone tried them out ? Your thoughts ?

Can a retailer, or someone please post the RRP (prices) ?

I have just bought a carbon/glass RDS 8" from the team at ROAR.
I have used it twice now but as it is my first paddle, I really can't compare it to anything else.
It feels light and easy to use and the handle is a nice fit in my hand.
It weighs 640grams but that is after it has been cut to my size.
I think that is fairly light, considering it's not full carbon.

I got the new carbon / wood Naish paddle 2 weeks ago and it's super sweet.

Very light and with the new handle set up and beautiful shaft design same as the one above, it's one I'd definately recomend.

I haven't seen the new Naish paddles yet but I like the look of the new Kialoa type T grip handle and the new smaller blades.

The new Starboard paddles also have much smaller blades.. Cam kicked our arses yesterday on our DW'er and he used the tiny new Kialoa Pipes paddle.

Yeah, the new shafts do look good (only saw the photos). They say the shafts are stiffer. They even look stiffer ! The older Naish paddles have the "hooped" carbon pattern on the shaft, and I think a slightly stiffer shaft and smaller blade would be better.

Surfanimals, how much is the timber one ?? Looks good.

(Edit, with pics, this paddle weighs about 750-800 grams, 90% certain there is no water in it!)

All paddle shafts will have some degree of "hoop tapes" around them if not the shaft would deform when using it - Looks like Naish have just moved the "hoops" so there off axis on the out side, there could very well be one or two layers of 90 degree hoops in between some where (it's amazing how strong one layer of carbon can be). A lot of the tape layout also has to do with what kind of winding machine there using and if their winding tapes or filiments (the old shaft looks like there filiment wound where as the new one looks like they've moved to tapes).

Thanks Crazy Canuk !
Great quick info download. I didn't know much about shaft construction, but now I know more.

Surf Animals, what other paddles have you tried, and what are your thoughts on comparisons ???

I think I might take a half leap of faith with the 8 inch wide blade, in fibreglass, for the durability and price.... But I really like the wood one too.

I believe retail is $449.00 but I was lucky enough to only pay wholesale so can only be 99% sure on that.

It is top end in every way though and well worth every cent.

I've got or had both the Naish surf and flat water carbon / glass (white blade) with carbon shaft and the new wood one craps on them both in every way with a smaller blade, 1/3 lighter and new construction. I also previously had the full carbon Naish (ie their top paddle) and this again craps on it.

I currently have a high end Quick Blade 100% carbon and it compares in every way but is $150 cheaper.

Hope that helps.

You should PM Dean (LSD)
His paddles are lighter than the Naish's and cheaper. Only carbon, no wood but as local as you can get.

With all due respect, I'd very much doubt it would be lighter.

Any lighter and this thing would fly away with the slightest puff of breeze.

If you into the 'local' crap all power to you but I'm interested in product and couldn't give a rats where it's produced - each to their own.

Love to know what car you drive, clothes you wear and food you eat if it's all about keeping it 'local'.

Thanks guys.

Thank Surf Animals. I completely appreciate where you are coming from regarding local comments, etc.

However, Dean "LSD" Snow does make some awesome stuff. And I know his paddles can get a shade under 400 grams (allegedly !, maybe with a slightly shorter than average shaft!).

Surf Animals, I'm glad these new Naish paddles seems to be every bit as good as other brands, and at a cheaper price. I understand that some brands retail up around, or even over AUD$600. As soon as I see a price tag like that, I'm freakin' out !! As it only seemed like yesterday that I was buying a full custom surfboard, tinted glass, pin lines, fins, for that money..... And my maths tells me that a paddle should be slotting in at around $200-$450, depending on materials, quality, brand, etc etc. At $600 it feels like there is a touch too much profit in there for someone !

(Edit - PS - the more I use my current Naish paddle, the more I feel the blade is too big, and the shaft too flexy. I also had the privilege of using two of DJ's paddles the other day, and I was suitably impressed with both).

Only sharing what is a good product.
I drive a Ford, wearing cords and white Tshirt, had meatballs for dinner.
No interest in power to me.
My boards and paddles don't have to have Hawaii written on them. Just have to perform.

Products great providing you put it in your hair. Nice and sticky, makes it stand up on end and you look like one of the cool kids.
At the moment I'm driving my Mums car, and the clothes I wear keep me warm. I have absolutely no vested interest in plugging Deans paddles except for the fact that I bought one, it was relatively cheap, bloody well made and as light as all f...
I've accidently jammed this puppy into cracks in the reef after eating it on a couple of occasions and it's still schmick.

If I didn't use Kialoa's I think I'd use one of Dean's..

They are noticeably lighter and I didn't think that would be possible.. and they've prooven to be very strong.

I love the look of Roscoe's paddle (it's one of Dean's 'AirWave' paddles) because it's a very similar shape blade to the Kialoa Methane.

Yeah the only advantage Kialoa has over Dean is the oval shaft and arguably, a more ergonomic handle. Both of these aspects are matters of personal preference. Dean's paddles are unbelievably light and incredibly strong.

Flaker 640grams is a very good weight for a FG (fibreglass) blade/carbon shaft paddle!
Up until now the Quickblade Kanaha has been one of the lightest in this class (fibreglass blade).

Most full carbon paddles are around 600grams (except for Deans freaky light ones), so they are lighter than the above. The Quickblade RACE ELITE is 500 grams.

A paddle that weighs 640 grams and performs well is a worthy investment if you don't want 100% carbon.

You blokes crack me up. In case you forgot, there's a big wide world outside this forum.

1. AA - I ain't sponsored bro, you'll note this topic refers Naish and another refer's Starboard......I have a mate who owns a surf shop and doesn't try and profit from a good friend, happy for me to get it for what he gets it at and pass on the stoke....and I've never mentioned his business or outlet out of respect for you guys who use this form to pimp your product....maybe I'll change my avatar to his logo ?

2. CMC - Wouldn't have a clue who this Dean bloke is - call it a Wollongong thing but I've never seen his products or heard of him so how can I buy something I've not seen or say it's good ? I have a Naish paddle (or 3) cause they are available where I shop.......I'll buy local if it's a good product, I'll also buy oversea's if it's a better product. It's 2010 not 1973.

Any wonder some of you guys cop so much heat from some on this forum. Don't 'smart arse' reply people (me on this ocassion) when they are merely answering questions to help others WITH NO AGENDA - I'm only on this topic cause someone asked an opinion for F--K's sake.

I'm sorry. I must have misunderstood. So you didnt say local was crap last night? Sober light of day probably a good time to sort that out. By the way while you live in Wollongong, Simondo is if I am not mistaken, a resident of the Surfcoast in Victoria and he probably lives about ten minute away from Dean. All Dale and I were doing was throwing another viable alternative into the ring. There is no right or wrong in Stand Up, it's about whats right for you. On that I think we agree, just pays to keep an open mind.

Exactly, because some are not happy in their own shin and want to be Hawaiian and full of Aloha.
Not much going on around in the Islands, well in the water anyway and none in here.
