Hi Everyone

I am new here and my husband and I are new to Stand Up Paddle boarding. I would love some advice on good spots to take a SUP holiday over Christmas/New Year along the NSW north coast.

As we are newbies it would be good to go somewhere with a flat/calm water and the ocean when we are feeling a bit more brave. We will either have a camper van or be camping.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers
Tanya

theres tons of places up the coast where you can go, you could go to a few more of the touristey places like byron or balina, yamba was nice 4 or 5 years ago when i was there, but i think they built a ****load of houses there, most places on the north coast are nice, just get on google maps or something like that find a nice little town and then hit up google and find out some features, just depends if you like some where touristey or not, theres some great little gems up and down the coast

Harrington/Crowdy Head is a good option

Harrington has the river for flat water up towards Taree

Crowdy Head has this big bay on the northern side which has a sweet little right and lots of sups get out there

its a pretty cruisy sort of place

You can camp in one of 2 caravan parks at Harrington or in the national pary at Crowdy but it has no creature comforts that my wife likes so we star at Harrington (but we go at Easter)

This kills me, but fully agree - Southwest rocks is stunning - the most beautiful water I have ever seen, and there is a good mixture of flatwater and small surf for sups. The town is really nice and there are heaps of eateries and loads of places to stay at reasonable prices. Also stacks of cool places to visit within a short drive - awesome spot.

South west rocks! or depending where you live, camping at the Ruins (Tiona) on the lakes way to Forster-Tuncurry is good. I know it's not the North coast but seriously you don't need to travel further if from Victoria or southern NSW. (wallis lake on one side, Tasman the other.spitting distance)

Why just go to one, do a few days at each, but be warned if you already haven't booked some of those places named will be N/A, so you need to get on it.

Try Evans Head it has a huge caravan park and once you get there you can walk to the beach, river and nice cold beer at the bowlo next door.

Tanya, Nth NSW, have a look at Shaws bay Caravan park BALLINA if your Camping, relatively inexpensive.
Theres a lagoon in front of the park thats still, then graduate into the river in front of the bridge, might be lucky enough to get a small wave coming through. And if your up to it out the front you have a sthly/ nthly option.

So many places to choose from. Take your spirit of adventure pack the station wagon look for a headland and just go. If your up near Byron check out places like clunes for accommodation. Have a look at Fingal to its a cool little coastal town just south of the tweed. Btw if you see a T4 dual cab on the road say hi as my partner and I are doing the same thing this year.

a bit further south but port stephens looks good.

The water is a bit tannany (if thats a word for the brownie colour of the tea tree sap in the water) but well sheltered and the northern creeks lead to a whole rnge of camp sites. Also the right next tot he coast.

Port Stephens is ok great for sailing. SUP wise I reckon further north is better myself.
