Great looking forecast for DW this weekend. Hopefully Kingy to Fingal/Snapper on Saturday and Snapper to Alley/Burleigh on Sunday as the wind goes a bit more SE. Always amazed by the small number of paddlers when it's windy. There's so many people on the Goldy now who own 12'6+ boards and seem to talk a lot about downwind paddling but I never see them when the wind gets up. It's always the same 4 or 5 faces... A lot of people missing out on what in my opinion is the most fun you can have on a SUP.

Hey Flounder, I'm trying to get a crew together on a regular basis, heres a link to the forum post www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/SUP/GC-and-Tweed-Coast-DW/ . When I get a chance I'll finish off the facebook page for people to organise down-winders on.

But I'm keen for a Saturday arvo run about 2pm from snapper area to currumbin or Talle and I'm sure two others might be keen as well.

looks like the whole long weekend is on. as i said above a few of us are going down the tweed. however the local coolie/bilinga to alley /burleigh looks the goods on sunday monday.

these are probably the best two but days if you want to a have a first up go.

i'm doing both days and if other experienced paddlers are around we'll be prepared to help.

kelly will be on coast guard patrol, so he will be on the look out . he may even be able to dash up say hello and see how every one is going
i'll be letting him know when we hit the water
cheers

I was surfing the point where no sup dares to go and Alley Cat appears around the corner and catches a small one towards the take off zone. I said hi and ask where she had paddled from.I was waiting for the rest of the gang, but 45 mins later nobody.
Did she paddle alone?Fit young girl that Allie Cat

Hey Mac, went with the rest of the crew from Hastings to kingscliff, then kept going to currumbin when everyone else went in. Not exactly perfect downwind conditions today, but good training anyway.

Well done Ali. + hope you've got some 50k paddles under your belt already & that you've recovered from your fatigued illness syndrome. I wish you all the best & hope you paddle the Kai'wi channel in under 6 1/2 hours, 32 punishing miles.
(Help Me Please Mr Wizard)

PS. Ali are going to give the Pai'lolo channel a crack you will not be disappointed.
I'm jealous already as I'm saving already for a 3 month Maui 2012 tour its only 13 months away.

mac we had a few people just learning, so kingie was far enough. personally i want to paddle over the whole weekend. do that big run and you wouldn't be doing much the next day if you are smart.

even thou the wind wasn't strong and was actually off shore for a bit past caba the swell and direction was good.
my first run on the tweed and i haven't seen swell that organised and spaced on the goldie. my 15'3 just ate that stuff up

looking forward to getting more runs down there
cheers

Hey Lacey, what is the 15'3"? I'm sure you have probably told us but I can't remember....
Funny how different boards suit different conditions, been paddling heaps with Paul on his F16 lately and sometimes he is much faster downwind and sometimes I am - and it can vary as the conditions vary during a single run. We had one run that started off with him catching little runners almost without paddling, I just couldn't get the Glide 17 to catch anything. Later on a rain squall hit us and it would have been 35 to 40knots pissing rain smoothed out the surface of the waves and I left him for dead. The Glide 17 loves those ballistic wind waves, just feels so comfortable surfing them, but in smaller 15 to 25 I can just catch anything on the Starboard Race 14, stuff I wouldn't have a hope of catching on the 17 - just don't have the power to accelerate it fast enough. Just love the Race 14 but there is something epic about taking drops and linking runners on the 17 from way way back.

Sorry to hijack the thread!

hi, it's a dc 15'3 x 25.5" with chines

its a flier. yesterday was light winds, but an organised swell that was spaced. it felt like the board was made for it.the board actually has some rocker too.

the glide did the same thing for me too. it is awesome in heavy conditions.

i always reckoned if the board was 3 to 4 kgs lighter, it would probably be more all rounded. i would be the first to order a lighter naish 17 if they ever did one. it has a beautiful outline- beautiful everything
interestingly, on the 15'3, i was hardly paddling yesterday, just a couple of taps here and there and easierly out doing others boards(including a naish 17)
cheers

Can't agree more with you guys about the Naish 17, awesome board in strong wind, but I find it difficult to really get moving in under 15 knots (ok, maybe that's just because I'm a girl and I'm not as strong as the boys). As Mark said, he was easily ahead of me on the 15'3 yesterday (might have had something to do with the engine too) with lighter/cross winds the weight of the board is definately a factor.
I think i can paddle my 12'6" quicker in lighter, cross or head winds, simply because it doesn't take nearly as much effort to get it moving.
Would love to have the same shape board as the naish 17 at 4kg lighter, and I reckon it would make a pretty big difference in the light stuff.
