[Moved from General Discussion]

Recently purchased a GoPro prior to my trip to Fiji. Got some great vid of paddling around Fijian islands. It was a headache initially getting familiar with the settings but after 2 days I was sweet. As per recent post, I couldn't get the LCD BacPac to work and have put it away for another day (Let's just say due to the immense frustration My GoPro nearly turned into a GoThrow).
I have a few questions:

I have the res on a setting of 4. Is this the best setting for Sup ?

Does anybody know if the 'floaty back door' is available in Aust ? (it was released in U.S. late July).

What's a good basic editing software to use ?

I recommend the GoPro for all SUPers as it really captures the moment.

Cheers in advance for responses and thanks to the Breezers who helped me out with advice prior to my trip on that bloody LCD BacPac.

The floaty backdoor is a great idea; you could use Aussie dodgineering & cable tie a fluro foam block to it?

For editing I use www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/?utm_source=sonycreativesoftware&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=redirect&lang=us&prdt=vegassoftware .. has more features than I know what to do with, including a neat feature to align video so it's up the right way.

I found Mode 4 is best for vertical, mode 5 best for horizontal ...

Hope that helps..

What mounts are you using / got some piccies for us?

Was also browsing the SUP gallery yesterday & found some awesome photos by CoreyB - using the small tube mount, the paddle view is great..

Floaty backs are available, got some here in Scarborough so you should be able to get them else where in Australia. Retail at $25.95 and look like a simple backup for a lost camera type situation.

While we are talking GoPro I have another question.
Can I ask what is the preferred method of securing your cam to your board. I got a surf hero for fathers day, very stoked. Does the big white sticky disk do the job or have you gone for the FCS plug or will the smaller black mounts be enough, having a few boards to play on I'll need to swap the cam about.
Cheers

Got the same thing for Fathers Day. I tried it out yesterday for the first time.
I put the large white plastic mount and leash attachment on the front of my board and had a paddle. Turned out quite well for a beginner. I did it on flat water just to try different angles etc. saw some nice sky and some nice water but then managed to get the angle sort of OK.
twas fun but!!
Sam at WSS regularly takes his out in same spot in meaty waves and alls fine.
I think you can buy extras for other boards. Hope this helps.

Big white mounts will do their job real well so much so that they are real hard to get off if you ever want to. The FCS plugs in the nose will look more discrete although you do have to drill into the board to put them in.
The small black adhesive mounts aren't recommended for a board as they don't have the surface area to ensure staying in place. If you coupled them with a floaty backdoor you are increasing your chances of not losing your camera.

Laurie: thanks for the advice. I use the mounts that come with the helmet pro. I use the flat adhesive mount on the front backed up with gaffa tape around the board for back up (I know 3m has a good rep but just don't have the confidence for my GoPro). I also used the display mount that the GoPro it attached to in the box. I just gaffa taped it around my board for the rear mount). Will post a few pics taken with the Pro from my time in Fiji soon. (I got more vid then stills). Got some great footage of SUPing thru Fijian villages.

Hi Guys,

I've found the Surf Expansion Kite (Big white disc) a huge overkill. If you put them on properly, they become practically permanent. We had a customer attach one to a kiteboard twin tip and we couldn't get it off with pliers and a big straight blade screwdriver.

You can use the flat or curved mounts (black smaller ones) but you need to prepare the surface properly, removing waxes, grease, oils or fingerprints with alcohol or thinners and press firmly onto a pre-warmed clean dry surface (sunshine is good).

There are products like Easy plug from Surftech which can be a good lanyard anchor point if you use the smaller black mounts. Make sure you use the correct mount, flat for flat surfaces and curved for convexed surfaces (tail not nose).

Floaty back door will be an added insurance policy.

Happy snapping/videoing

DM

PS. Never use a suction cup mount on a surfboard or SUP. They will fail. They are great for cars etc.
