Looking at purchasing one of these for christmas or sometime after, any info on the pros and cons of using them in the water, purchasing mounts etc would be greatly appreciated.

Being a non camera person I've read all the specifics but it reminds me of chemistry back at school (doesn't make any sense)

Cheers

I would think they are much of a muchness to be honest, really I think with all the technology involved its almost a ford v holden question. I have a go pro and would probably buy another one. I guess some will like other types. I started looking at one called a drift innovation the other day it also seemed really cool. The little JVC is also worth a look.

Geez, the go pro fell short of the mark in that video comparison.

That's what I thought, so it's left me more confused. The only things I'm not sure about with the Sony is the mountings for your board and the fact that it needs to be turned on before being placed in the housing

really I went and had a look at a heap of reviews and all of them still say the GoPro. I still reckon its probably a close run thing really.

The sony can be turned on once in cover I have one and the mounting issue isnt a problem, the pack comes with one flat and a curved one plus a go pro converter so u can use the pros mounts as well . the only problem I am having with it is fogging of the lens after extended time in the water

That tests really wasn't that revelant to us as it was all low light test. No sports cam is great in low light. That test needs to be done again in full sunshine and underwater you will get completely different results. It also doesn't address the rolling shutter issues of the contour , the Sony is very steady in this regard , but it gets bloody hot , the ion runs really cool , no fogging issue and very simple to use , the Sony was a nightmare to set up with wifi. On all the units you will lose your wifi connection when the camera is under water a real pain in the arse. Shape ease of use , cost , no fog & accessories ION wins but it is not the same picture quality of the Sony or go pro but still pretty good.

IMHO

What about something like this , I know its not a action cam but would it be more versatile.?

Hi dtm
Keep the GoPro for land use only or throw it in the bin like I did. Get an ION if you want crystal clear water footage - Yes Please Mr Wizard.

How does the ION mount to your board?
The kit online looks as though it has no added buoyancy if it comes off?

Thanks,
Scott.

Find a Aluminium fabrication welder they will make a bracket so the ION screws onto it and it will then fit into the FCS plug. Yes Please Mr Wizard.

Hey guys,

Forget that Panasonic thing.
The only good thing about that camera is the lcd display.

Battery life and poor usb plugs quality are a major issue since the charger will no longer charge after a few months of intensive use.

Dan,
I never get fogging when I use the fog inserts. I dry them out regularly and never have a problem.

I have heard good things about the contour, and I like that there are some great options out there now. The Go Pro HERO 3 is pretty killer tho.

I use the anti fog inserts with my Hero 3 Silver works fine. Great footage for the average bloke.
These are almost bulletproof cameras. Just make sure you have a floaty back door or tether!
I like the modular design of the Go Pro that allows many parts to be replaced or upgraded, also lots of genuine and after market accessories.
Syncs well with Mac's iMovie and iPhoto
Only gripe is the battery life, abysmal in cold weather ( a second battery is a good investment) and the clunky iPhone app, hopefully a new version soon....
