I'm looking at getting a GPS Watch ,and have started looking into differant models.

Just wondering what other breezers are using ,I'm mainly after distance ,speed ,heart rate etc.

There not cheap ! ..... and I don't really want to pay top dollar for things I won't use.

Cheers

What Hux said. I bought a Garmin 405 Forerunner and exceeded my expectations in every way.

They really are awesome packed with features and user friendly.

Only thing I would do different next time is to get one from the USA. When I was there in December I saw my exact model for sale at Best Buy for $260(AUD) and I paid $440(AUD) here in Aus.

USA is the place for cheap electronics (dont know about Asia prices).

I've got the Garmin 305. It's a little bigger than the 405 but has better battery life.

You can get them for $250 from ebay.

The Garmin 405 Forerunner is fantastic. Can get them from Ebay but be very careful as some have been known to be copies and around the same price as the genuine Garmin. (I got stung) GPS R US at Currumbin are very good with competitive prices. Cheaper than Ebay!

The Garmin 310XT is the only one rated as water resistant to 50m and is around the same price or a little cheaper than the 405cx. Only trouble is that it's huge.

Gets pretty confusing trying to work out what's the best without too many gadgets!

I found it pretty hard to get exactly what I was after on Maui with this sort of stuff but mail order from the mainland only takes a couple of days to Maui.

So how does the 405 /405cx go if it's not as waterproof as the 310xt?..... has anyone had any problems when they have fallen into the water?

That did cross my mind about Hawaii being limited and I'm considering buying it from the mainland and getting it sent over.

Cheers

All the other Garmins are "water resistant" to IPX7 standard. That means water proof to a depth of 1 metre.

I have surfed and kited with mine and it's fine so far.

It should be fine for paddling and general surfing. Don't go diving or surfing big waves where you might have to dive deep or get held down.

BTW If you go prone paddling and you want to record heart rate, the transmitter on your chest gets sandwiched between your body and the board and the signal can't get to the watch.

Cheers ....hopefully that won't happen unless conditions get to rough and I have to prone paddle.

I'm looking at the Forerunner 405cx they want $500 for it in Aust ,but I can get it for $320 US with free shipping to Hawaii so this is looking my best option.

Hey Boylos, had a quick look at the specs - what is the advantage of the cx over the regular 405?

I know quite a few of the Maui crew have the 305, I think they were on special at Costco for $120 or $130 for a while!

Seems like the older models sometimes come up really cheaply if you can be bothered looking around, although the 405 looks like something you could actually wear without looking super geeky

In my past life, before children, I managed a outdoor/backcountry ski store overseas. We stocked Sunto watches as they are highly regarded in the outdoor industry for sports such as ultra marathons, adventure races etc.
Not cheap but definitley worth the investment. Again have a look at prices in the States as they are not cheap here.

Hey Johnathan .... the only differances I can see is that the 405 doesn't come with a heart rate strap for around your chest ,and the 405cx does.

Also after reading that review you sent it's GPS tracking seems a lot better once it locks on it doesn't drop out plus other positives and then there negatives I supose your never get the perfect watch!.

Anything you might of picked up on that I may of missed?

The Garmin web site (and the review) said that the CX incorporates the heart rate into the calorie calculations.

If you are using the GPS on the water then losing signal will not be an issue. That is only a problem if you are near tall buildings or under trees (sometimes heavy cloud cover and bad weather can have an effect.)

Sometimes a GPS takes a while to find the satellites when you first turn it on. As long as you are out in the open it will be fine.

It's worth pointing out that GPS are excellent for measuring speed and distance and getting a little picture of where you have been. The average GPS is not even remotely accurate in terms of absolute positioning.

As far as I was aware the main difference between the 405 and 405cx is that the CX acitvely measures and records vertical climb and fall during your session.

Largley irrelevant if you are using it for paddling.

Yeh a bit hard to paddle vertical ...... unless your paddling up a 10ft wave....the heart rate monitor would go though the roof!

Sounds good to me the 405 is the one to go for , how to fine the right price!

Check this out........its the size that GPS receivers have been recently reduced to

So you would think something less bulky & tougher would be developed, screen/digit readability would be the limiting factor I would think.
A GPS needs to be mounted on the board for 2 reasons, 1, they pickup arm movement, so can give eratic speeds, 2, if mounted on the board in view, your paddle stroke can be optimised almost instantly.
I beleive, unless anything has changed, any altitude function is useless, as the GPS signal is inacurate in the vertical....thats why aircraft cant use it?
A great feature for sup use would be VMG, (velocity made good) to a way point. then you could see how straight & fast a board realy goes.

I love that speedpuck.. Nice big diplay.. maybe one day they'll be cheaper or someone will copy it..

Some of the SUP guys in the US are using it and even have a hole in the board for it to sit flush.
