I need to gauge interest in staging a fun dw race soon (within next month before the wind goes) with the possibility of a few races next season.

Jason at West Oz Boardsports has said he would chuck in a few prizes. If there is an entry fee ($15??) then a few cash prizes as well.

Jas has a sup trailer so he could bring 10 to 12 boards back.

BBQ after.

I plan to have a 2 week waiting period. Would look at the forecast and make a call late in the week. Best day on the week end with a 2 to 3pm start. Not March 20 obviously.

Course appox 9k

Start

Finish

Would have a jetski on hand and all competitors must use a leash.

Prizes would be mainly spot and fun; maybe a trophy for the winner.

Please let me know if you are interested in sponsoring, competing and/or helping on the day.

PM contact details please; prefer email.

If it a goer I will contact the yacht club and marine authorities and see what hoops I have to jump through.

Great idea hilly. I'm in if it is a Sunday or Friday arvo.
The idea of a 'forecast' based event is awesome. Call it the 'reception race' , ie waiting for the doctor! or the standby. Anyway good thinking

Im keen Hilly although I have had little experience in DW's and also Im just in the process of getting a board.
Perhaps there should be two sections;
1. first over the line
2. Handicap based on age (your handicap time = real time minus your age related handicap )e . 20s..no handicap ,30s ..-1 minute , 40s ..-2 minutes ,50s ...-3 minutes.

Prizes will be random the idea is having fun.

Great idea Hilly. What about those that don't have a dedicated dw board? I'm keen but only have a short board (whopper) not suited to dw. Would a class of "non dw" boards be a problem for officials because we would be really sllloooowww? Would like to take part but don't want to be a hassle. Cheers Beery

I'm keen if family duties don't interfere. Likewise don't have a DW board but would be happy to do it on my Whopper.

At this stage I have a spare 12'6" starboard that I'm happy for anyone to use. Its not the fastest board in the world but is certainly ok for dw paddling.

NOTE - A few changes to the plan.
One weekend as there is a long weekend (5/6/7th) and the Mandurah race (20th) so time restraints.
Shorter course to cater for less experienced paddlers and to start and finish outside the sponsors business.
Demos available before the registration and after race. Phone West Oz (site sponsor) to organise.
If you can bring extra boards it would help Anyone there not paddling?? who could help move people or boards up to the start please let me know

Im keen if it is on the Saturday (working Sunday) my biggest board is an 11'4" Nalu and I may even have a buyer for that which would only leave me with a 10'2" JL Mano. If anyone has a good DW board 12'6", 14, 17 etc for sale pm me.
Otherwise would be keen to borrow your 12'6" Akhawk, I haven't done any DWers but am keen to get into it and due to lack of swell have done a few long paddles along the coast in these easterlies.

Maybe one of you retainers out there might be able to loan me a good downwinder demo board, if I like it I may buy one

I will be keen for either a paddle or to help out. Just back on the water again after a few weeks off so will depend on how the body holds up over the next couple of weeks... Will do it on my 10'11" surf sup so will be slow and steady

Hey Matty welcome to the Breeze.
Miz can use the 17' if she wants. Michele will use the Glide if her knees okay. You can use the 11'2 if your boards not repaired. I'm happy to sit out and look after the kids if Michele paddles and help out at the finish. Will be good to get three first time racers on the water.

Great to hear a bunch of noobs are coming down Definitely emphasis is on fun.

I hope the more experienced get out there and help people with technique before we start.

I was planning to not paddle just run it and maybe give some technique lessons if people are interested. I will be like Luke with the kids.

Need some ideas for prizes, so far I have:

1st 12 6 - Trophy
1st unlimited - Trophy
1st Female - Trophy

Trophies will be hand built collectables

Then??

1st Surf sup?
Best fancy dress?
Ugliest board?
Youngest finisher?
Oldest finisher?
1st to finish with a pet on board?
Out of the hat?

What you reckon? Prizes will vary and be at sponsors discretion.

Entry fee will go on fuel for support boat and drinks for after the paddle. Please bring your own water as I was thinking softies beer and wine
