Planning a family holiday to Victor Harbour over Christmas / New Years, and wondering if it is safe to paddle on the coastal waters off Victor Harbour?

Was mainly thinking flatwater paddling around near the footbridge and Granite Island.

Has anyone heard of any dangers? I know theres the inland waters arounf Hindmarsh islad which are presumably safer, but we are staying right on the beach near Granite Island.

There's a nice little reef break about 500mts to the right of the coarse way I will often surf on the SUP if it's too big else where or the wind is preferable and never given it another thought. Keep in mind, the gap between the bluff and the island is called shark alley for a reason but we all take our chances.

Personally, I'll be strapping on the esky with rod holders and squidding out there this summer as I have a week down there in January.

Another option is a few laps around Encounter lakes if you need to get out of the wind. No sharks in there :)

Welcome to VH Teeps.

Being a victor local I SUP and windsurf around there heaps. Never seen anything too scary yet. There are some great SUP spots around for crusing and catching a few waves. The spot Danny mentioned is called "the channel". It's a nice little mellow wave and worth checking out. Needs a bit of swell to work though. Shark alley has not really lived up to its name since they ceased whaling in VH. The wave is adjacent to where the old whaling station was located.

Under the causeway and out to granite island is actually pretty shallow. You can paddle around the sheltered side of granite island and there is plenty of cool stuff to check out. You can even pull up at the kiosk on the island and stop for a coffee/ice cream /beer. We circumnavigated the island a few days back which was pretty hard work. I would only ever consider it on a day with no swell at all. It can get pretty big around the back side.

If you get a westerly wind, a nice downwinder is from the bluff, to wright island, then down to the causeway.

The western end of encounter bay also is worth checking out for some cruising. It's a pretty easy paddle out to wright island.

Drop me a PM when you are in town if you want. More than happy to go for a paddle.

Cheers

Dave

good advice so far. i went solo around the island last january on what looked like a pretty easy day with little wind and an imperceptible swell as you can see in the photo taken on my return.

but as Darvio says it was pretty hard work on the other side where the backwash from the rocks meant i was paddling up and down the bumps as much as i was going forward. wouldn't do that again!
bring some warm clothes as the weather is as changable as Vic. enjoy

Hey Teeps, great to hear you're heading over! The SA Ocean Paddlers have an event in early Jan called the Four Island Classic. It runs from The Bluff to Pt Elliot approx. 11kms of open water. If conditions are right(& we're due for a good one!) the swell & sea breeze line up for some fun paddling. They have heaps of water cover & the event is open to skis, kayaks & sup, the date will be posted early Dec.
A lot of our Adelaide crew surf the south coast near Middleton, or there are great downwind conditions at Normanville where Maggs lives. There is always someone on the water somewhere & we're all happy for company.
Windsup have a race at West Lakes in Jan which would be worth the trip to Adelaide. Again, date will be up soon.
If you like, you can keep abreast of what happens here by following the club facebook page, SA SUP Crew www.facebook.com/groups/160314413996037/

Hope to catch up then, Fuzz
