How do you have so much time to post anyway?? Are you a politician or a fireman?![]()
Doggie doesn't deny being armless and legless
.
Why that is almost defensive!

Keep going Doggy, you got me cracking up in the meal room at work. All the other drivers think I've lost the plot....Ha Ha Ha...!!![]()
Sought of agree, i quite often take a mal with me and have surfed that, not necessarily because its better fun, quite the contrary, its more i can get as many waves as i want without fear of dispute, whereas if on my sup( i prefer) i have to be more politically correct and give waves away the irony being i am competitive when i am on a shortboard but if i am on a sup i been called a c&&t but nonetheless undeterred also having surfed for 45+ years, i surf whether on a sup or shortboard, as mr Lopez in a recent interview said the sooner all surfers realize that Sup is here to stay the better ![]()
I agree Ock, i had a surf at catbay on a 8-6 sup,was told by a group of guys to take that piece of **** barge and f###k off.It so happened that i also had my mate with me and he had a 10' footer on the roof so i wen't in and got it.I paddled out and proceeded to take every wave i could, not one word was said. Not one word about the length etc etc.I know they knew i was making a statement, but really the 8-6 sup was probably the second smallest board in the water, and i was not pigging out so go figure.Ock im like you im long in the tooth, surfed for 50 years now, and usually let all the snipping go thru to the keeper, but these guys were surfing shortboards, and were pretty ordinary, and maybe because their choice of board was bullsh#t for that wave, i just couldn't let it go.The sooner everybody gets it ,that we surf for fun,the better. There is this perception that by definition that if you ride a shortboard you are automatically a superior surfer no matter what the conditions, and b4 all the shorties get wound up,let me say i will occassionly still ride my 7s fish when my old bod feels soft and warm.![]()
After reading the short board forum, I think there is a slight mongrel canine "doin a bit of froth'n" about feeding the chooks um er Suppers with two bob fodder.
Seriously not sure what the motive is? a bit of friendly banter between all fellow surfers? nah its just fuelling more banal comments that end up as punchups in the carpark?
What's the point, give me the old days when surfers were all surfers and the common thread was against a mainstream and aggressive thought process which now seems to prevails by certain sections of the surfing fraternity about their rights of ownership of the waves.
There was a great song way back... "you have to have a membership card to get inside" the old ethos of surfing was get ****ed... don't have a ticket, don't tell me to do...
I think the initial point of the thread may have been lost but i will say this.
I just joined the ranks of Sup's as well. ( only very new)
As a short board surfer i that will always be my first love. But i will say this. Sup is not as easy as it seems. Took my board yesterday into the Ocean surf (all be it tiny swell) and the difference from flat water was extreme to say the least. I consider myself a competent surfer (others might not) but the sup thing in a crowd would be simply dangerous in the wrong hands. To be honest though i ended up back on my short board later and the boggiers felt the same about my hard board so i guess its just a case of sharing and being respective of others in the water![]()

Sunday 22nd April, Point Cartwright Sunshine Coast. Surf 4-6 foot with a relaxed and easy going small crowd. Amongst us were two SUP riders, both very competent riders. Until one decides to get cocky and sit in the main cluster close to a sucky rock shelf. The first waves of the set come through and clean up those sitting on the inside edge of the take off zone. The SUP rider clumsily turns his craft into a late take off and proceeds to nose dive the board into the path of other surfers duck diving and trying to avoid the take off zone.
The SUP and rider lands on top of another surfer who was warning him very vocally that he was in the way. Something either a fin or a paddle slices a 15cm gash in the calf of the poor bastard who got in the way, this gash split the calf right down to the tendons. An Ambulance was called and the victim was carted off for surgery and a long lay off from the water.
I have seen too many encounters this one by far the worst involving SUPs in critical zones.
How long will it be before a permanent disability or death becomes a headline due to the stupidity of irresponsible SUP riders?
SUP riding in crowded surf is just another chapter in the evolution of greed in surfing and in the line-up. Before SUPs it was PWCs and tow-ins and before that it was wave skis and in many cases mals.
Its good that people surf and on different boards but the reality is some do not mix without lots of common sense and respect and folks that is where it falls apart.
Locally, SUP riders have pretty much taken over two breaks and regularly surf 4 or 6 others. Everyone I have spoken to about their presence on the coast hates it but they seem powerless to anything about it.
For what its worth I believe SUPs and wave skis should not be permitted to surf amongst surfers on small boards just like PWCs are banned but that will not happen unless there are deaths or riots or both.
