Skeghead and I are staying at the Mango Bay Resort on the Coral Coast which is only 2k from Beachouse Resort.

Both resorts have access to reef breaks and offer budget, but very good accomodation.

We chose this location to get away from the surf crowds and to give our ladies a bit of scope for daily excursions.

The tides are currently high at dawn and dusk .. this is good because it also coinsides with the glass-off periods and the reefs only seem to work at high tide.

But the quandry is .. what are we gunna do when the tides coinside with the wind which blows most daylight hours ?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

SIGATOKA SAND DUNES

IS THE ANSWER TO OUR PROBLEM

We've now met the local surf instructor, JUSTIN, who
will take us to the above beach break tomorrow.

This spot is a rivermouth, sandy beach break, which is
protected by a point from the prevailing southeast wind.

I checked it out on google satalite/maps, and the setup
is very similar to our home break .. Carlton Rivermouth
super bank .. amaising

THANKS FOR ALL THAT ADVISE

Have just done the Sigatoka sand dunes.

Our guide had all his didgets .. we made a point of counting them.

On the day the conditions were a bit rough with a side wind and chop
which made it very hard to paddle. The swell was strong and settie
and there were good banks. It needed to be a lot cleaner.

But we worked hard and got a few.

The interesting part of the trip was the discovery of SHIPWRECKS ...
just a little house on the spot where you start your treck over the dunes
to the break .. offering weary travelers/surfers a shower and BB&Dinner
for FJ$30.

THE most valuable info gathered from this outing was that the area
draws the swell and is best up at the rivermouth end on a low tide .. and even in the prevailing trades it works because of the protection from the point .. we'll get it right one day .. so it works as a long sand bank right hander.

Call us pussies but the change from reef to sand was a pleasant respite.

We hired our boards from Andrew at Beachouse (one h).

Andrew's off dn wdn to an island for a few days ..he's been a great help
and just a phone call and he'll set you straight.

he's a dark horse
and underachieved last year.

He's just got to get the right boards.

but

BACK TO FIJI CORAL COAST

up for a dawn patrol but a bit stormy
and choppy .. would be good for Sigatoka
river mouth in the middle of the day ... but
we're off to church .. and then there's the
pies v hawks .. think we'll have a recovery
day today .. and pray for softer landings.

Frigate Passage
Have made enquiries

Went to the service at the local village.
Fijian church realy rocks .. kept lookin
out the window for the Blues Brothers Bus.
Thoroughly recommended.
We went to the Assemblies of God
in Namatakula.

They make you so welcome and the
spirit and vibe was so intense .. !! .. I'll
be right now till Christmas.

Have done our ritual dawn patrol
before the trade wind got up and
and desecrated the swells.

FRIGATES AHOY

We've taken up the challenge and booked
the resort boat to go to the island of YANUCA
Four of us will be dropped at frigates, 2 x sups
and 2 x short boarders.
Apparently the break is only 10 min. paddle from
the island.
cost = fj$160 per head for the day.
There'll be some tourists with us and they'll be
on the island, involved in resort activities.

We had the surf content of the island trip canned, the surfside of it anyway, due to logistic problems.
The boat would have to be in two places at once.

So Skeghead went and I stayed behind.

We've decided to extend our stay here at Mango bay
but to hire a small 4x4 with racks to give us a bit of
scope and a better chance at vave strikes.

I am down with back cramps .. requiring Wild Turkey with Corona chasers ..
and massarge
