Ok, I'm comparing apples with oranges and it would never happen.

But imagine if on the same day the surf was perfect and the downwinding conditions were also perfect, you had the suitable equipment for both and they took the same amount of time to set up. ie driving to the surf coast vrs car swap thing.

What would you rather do?

My answer: I'd toss a coin and then probably do the downwinder. I think I'd choose downwinding because there is the one less factor in the equation - other people, who are not part of the equation, competing for the same waves/runners.

If it was Lumers he'd probably do the down-winder and throw in a few reo's and cutbacks while on a runner..

In an ideal world I'd downwind to Sandon Point, sell some Chinese popouts from my boot to some alpha males, lube my arse with butter, find some smallish lads and impress the friendly locals down there with my surfing techniques, order a round of Coopers Green for everyone at the pub then cut and run.

Hi Oliver
it's all about Monday sitting at your desk after your fun down winder today on the 14' glide and the new swell You rode that hit the Surfcoast Sunday
Just hope the wind backs off

No way, On Monday I will be sitting in my office under florescent lights staring at a monitor for eight hours, telling more bad jokes, checking out the action on Seabreeze, thinking about my next sickie and knowing at the end of the day I will be one day closer to my death.

it's all about the bad jokes right now.

Oliver,
Most of the time there is no one out when I am surfing too so I pick surf. Downwinder is for weekdays for me after work because I live 1 hour from waves.

I reckon laceys lane summed it up pretty well in one sentence in the second post.

I'd have to go surf over downwinder.
Got great waves this morning for a bit over 3 hours. Wind was light, crowds not so bad
and head high on the sets. Great morning really!

Don't get me wrong though, I still enjoy a good downwinder.

That's when you stand upwind of a group of your "mates".....drop a real foul one & watch the reaction.........

This is an easy one for the gold coast - surf the early and downwind later in the day.

If taken literally then it's a pretty easy one for anywhere. Downwinder conditions make surfing pretty miserable unless you can find a sheltered break, so a downwinder would be the choice.

In the spirit of the question, good surf vs good downwinder? Surf!

Downwinder every time. When you're surfing 50% of the time you're paddling against the waves to get back out.

Thats a waste of time on the water IMO.

Not a waste of time Lobes paddling back out, its a time to reflect on the joy that last wave gave you and paddling hard and fast to grab another.

Yep. The paddle out is a time to rest and let the short boarders have a few waves.

Even on a quality downwinder on a 14' Glide you spend more than half your time not surfing runners.

Couldn't agree more, Lobes.

DC, Lacey, Jonny and I did a really nice downwinder today, from Snapper to Burleigh. It was really nice to be out in the big blue again away. Looking forward to getting up your way one day and getting into it.

The runs are predicted to be even better tomorrow so we will have another crack at it then. Hopefully we will get a few pics this time...

Surf - surf surf surf - more surfing. With respect.

But, I really should try this downwinder thingo - although I am sure I will need something other than the Big Mother Easy if its to be any fun at all.

Now how did I end up choosing that nickname? I don't even kite surf. As usual, I had my brain in the wrong way round. Doh I think I'll reinvent myself as Marvin. Don't be fooled.
