Can someone please explain this concept to me.
I'm assuming it has something to do with the direction of the wind and how strong it's blowing.
Thanks.
Just kidding..

Re SUP.. a 'downwinder' is paddling in the same direction as the wind is blowing (sometimes it varies a little in direction so not always a perfect down wind direction) and usually the stronger the wind the better the downwinder because you can surf the waves better.. Stronger wind= bigger waves.. If the wind is only light it's more of a down wind direction paddle.. and not really a 'downwinder'.
Usually done in a group so they can meet at the finish point.. Load onto one or two or more cars.. Drive to the start and unload.. Paddle downwind hopefully catching waves along the way that are called runners.. To catch runners you are best to use a downwind board.. or a flat water race board.. and even some larger surfing board can work.. Once all are at the end the people who drove to the starting point need a lift back to their cars.. Sounds messy and a hassle but its not.. Sounds boring but it's not.. Sounds pretty easy but it's not.. It is one thing.. and that's fun..

btw.. Sometimes if the wind is strong enough you hardly need to even paddle.. See second vid.
One more thing.. It's not a race.. In the same way downhill skiing is usually not a race to the bottom of the hill... But it can be..
