We're meeting at Sandy at 10.15 for those keen to join us.

Ohhhh, so close. I've been in Melbourne all week but flew back last night. It would have been fun to do one of those famous PPB runs.

How were the respective Morning & Afternoon Runs ??

The wind was up and down a bit on Corio Bay, but mostly up! It was a very good run.

Afternoon session seemed to be around 30 knots with some gusts hitting 40. Decent sized wave faces too. Cam took his Jav out and disappeared over the horizon. I'm certain he didn't go around the orange buoy. The protest is in.

Mike Ockanui on his first ever downwinder absolutely kicked my arse. How embarrassing. If I had any dignity, I'd be shamed into giving up downwinders forever. Luckily I don't have dignity.

Mike was on a 14' Glide and I was on a 14' Surf Race. To be fair to the brands though, the boards were well matched, the difference was mostly due to Mike staying dry and me spending too much time in the drink.

Hey Woody,

Well your not alone there every Melb downwider I have done so far was more like going to a water park, I spent more time climbing onto the board than standing on it.

Maybe you and I should paddle together

Your not the only one to spend time in the drink this arvo Paul,
never swam so much before on a downwinder but got some of my best runs too on the Jav so looking forward to the challenge and more time on this board.
Thought I'd share a pic from before we left the Stkilda beach starting point, the most photographed sup and beach spot in Melbourne I reckon,

Cheers.

Best part about downwinders is how educational they are. For instance, today I learned what an intercostal muscle is. And how much the little buggers can hurt.

The morning d/w'ers took off from Port Melbourne to get a better angle on the wind, as there was a lot of west in it. DJ, Jonathon, BWDave and Charlie went to Sandy and Pete and I stayed out wider and continued on down to Ricketts Point.

Never seen so much debris in the water, though. For the first half of the run (10 km I suppose) Pete and I were dodging tree branches galore. At one stage I found myself out in front of Pete, which basically never happens, and he checked his fin and had a ton of weed and other stuff wrapped around it. Once cleared, he took off again.

From about Brighton down to Beaumaris was pretty good. Lots of runners and we seemed to clear what must be the Yarra outfall and had no more branches and other floating objects to slalom around.

Looks like you might have to cool your jets Mike - crappy westerly won't serve us for a downwinder unless you want to cross the bay from Altona.

Yeah.. it was looking pretty good while it was still nor-west but now it's gone true west it's stuffed.. Let's hope it swings back nor-west again because I'm keen.

Maybe next time for me Phill, I have a very neglected lawn to mow so I can't afford the drive time to Corio today.
