Don't we measure the back as well ?
Growing up surfing (mid to late 80's) we referred to wave height as follows (in feet) 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,10,12,15,20 ft. And in case of Waimea, 20-25 ft. This refers to back of wave which we can't see anyway so we work off half of the face = wave height e.g this photo has a 30ft face therefore it is a 15ft wave.
Btw, when did all thus 'double overhead' talk come in ? I've been out of the game for a while.
