Just poaching this one from the zone.

Very interested to know, who here still rides their lie down paddle regular surfboards or is it all SUP 100%?

I personally ride what's best for the day from a pair of flippers to a 6'2 Fish to a 11' prone paddleboard to a 9'3 SUP, an OC6 over distance or a OC4 in the surf. Whatever works best that day for fun.

Also funnily enough, the more I SUP the better I surf a shortboard. Just got a newy today.

Anything and Everything in the water! SUP surfing/paddling gives you even more options to chose from.

I would have to agree that SUP surfing does improve your normal surfing. You end up putting a lot more power into those turns.

for a while there I hardly rode my short board 6'6 thirst rounded pin. Just rode my SUB in whatever waves there was. but then took the 6'6 away on a holiday (to reconnect ha) and loved it. Now it is about a 70/30 split between SUB and 6'6

Love my longboarding and use the sup when conditions are more suited.
IMO suping does improve your surfing.

Bit like you - still play on my boards - especially as I am new to the SUP world. Can see myself heading to SUP and a glass pipo board that Rabbage made for me as I am blessed with shoulders that can dislocate at the drop of a hat!

The good news is that my 17yo (6'5" unit) who rides nothing but lids has been seen using a SUP as into into stand longboarding!

The wheel is turning and love seeing a mob or pod of the boys off Queensie in the mornings

Took up SUP 10 months ago and ridden a shortie twice since I think - but that is the nature of an obsessive personality

Mind you I am just getting back into the Mtn Bike so am thinking about the shortie again as well, plus going to the Maldives in August so could be a good excuse.

Ride anything and everything from 6'4"shorty through 6'6", 6'10 and 7'0" and SUPS from 9'3" and 9'8" to 16' downwind board. Have a mal too but haven't ridden it once since got into SUPs 2 years ago. Not sure SUP has made me surf better though - spent 6 months only on SUP learning the ropes and when i got back on my shorty, my timing was shot to pieces. Sort of trying to turn too hard. I find now is best to mix it up - a few surf SUP sessions, a few shorty surfs, a downwind run or two. The best thing about discovering SUP (surf and downwind) is there is now no reason not to be in the water every single day, regardless of conditions.

Prefer the longboard in the waves ,every now and then I'll SUP Surf.

Mainly long distance/downwind paddles for me !..... it helps heaps with my fitness so when I'm surfing I feel heaps better .

So I've got the ocean covered!

Dick Van Straalen once told me that even Rasta would not ride any board more than 3 times in a row. That you started surfing to the board and it limited your scope.

I keep a real pig in my quiver to ride in between SUP and shortboard if it's been too long between. Used to be a 6'5 x 19 1/2 single fin, now a 6'3 x 19 3/4 quad semi round nose. The added volume softens the blow. Funnily enough these boards have similar outlines to a SUP also........

i had to lenghten my s/boards to 6'4, longest short/board i've had. turning wasn't a problem, however i wasn't going anywhere. the 6'4 fixed that. is just me, but when you do grab the shortie out of the bag, it looks like some grommies paddle pop stick

That is really interesting stuff from Dick Van, thanks CMC. The crossover/transition board is a damn good idea too.

still enjoy heading to local headlands sitting out back stealing all the waves off the old grandpa longboarders that use to always steal every wave when i rode my shortboard then . Now who smiles with right of passage not to mention a 10ft whopper will f**k up most longboards if they don't give way . anyway why lie down if all you have to do is get back up again, nothin i can't do on SUP that i could do in 28years of shortboard. Sold all of my 8 surfboard quiver in the past 6 weeks.

Started SUP's 3 months ago, had a longboard session about a month ago, over it in 20 mins and haven't surfed since and have no plans too.

No crowds to contend with, solitude, total stoke and now a real reason to love 'surfing'.

Sorry Scotty mate but that is not a cool attitude. This is why mals hate standups (and why I had to get a busted hand dealing with one of those "grandpa longboarders" who was sick of inconsiderate SUPers). Like the T-shirt says, let a few go through champ.

Ah Scotty-san

Plenty of waves,
be humble
try not to damage too many people as it tends to go round again and again!

Just smile knowingly, shake you head and paddle onto twice as many

I still ride all types of surfboards and cannot see that stopping for me. This year is my 30th anniversary and I still love it all. I ride anything and even bought myself a 4'4" today! Yes, I never imagined that I could surf a board that small but I can. At 45 I am just as much a grommy as I was when I first started all those years ago.

The SUP side (surfing and LD) is just another part of the whole ocean experience.

Just decided to sell my surf board. If anybody is looking for a long board let me know. I'm not too keen to be in the chilly waters of Melbourne over Winter, so if it's not Hawaii it will be SUP 110%.

Less than you think if it is less than 10' and then we will wait to see the shots of you in Ulus
There are plenty of SUP's you can hire on the Ulu/Impossibles run dont know about further up.
Impossibles could be possible on a SUP - Ulu is -10' and the French boys carving on 9' boards -thats where I decised I needed to make the change-well to smaller stuff first as the heart muscle needs work!

I can no longer prone surf after 20 years due to shoulder problems which is why I took up SUP. So far the shoulders have been OK so have sold all my windsurfing gear to fund my first board. I can't bring myself to sell my surfboard even thoought I can't use them anymore but I can see this changing as I can see a second board in the SUP quiver coming.
