Has anybody made their own deck pad using 3mm eva yoga mat? Anybody know what the eva density for a sup pad is? And density of an eva yoga mat?

amart allsports have mats for $40, range of colours and patterns. Large enough to do. Couple of boards.

Further research and I have discovered that he yoga mats hold water so that idea is out the door.
Applying adhesive is a fairly straightforward process. Apparently it is the adhesive backing which makes the commercial pads so ridiculously expensive for what they are.

Why? I like to make and fix my own stuff. My life would be much easier (and far less interesting)if I just bought stuff but I'm not wired that way.

Would be great for timber boards

Boof, I made a deckpad for my windsurfer from a couple of eva pool mats. I basically set up a router with a jig & routered opposing diagonal grooves - worked a treat! As mentioned though, best to make sure that it won't hold water.

Just to add, after sup'ing with a waxed board vs a deckgrip - I'd nearly go wax (or monstergrip), there's also this product- http://www.newaxoz.com/

Sounds like unlike me you're a handy kind of bloke. Have you looked into cork for grip? Some companies are using it mixed with other foam materials. You can buy it in 3mm thick sheets that you could maybe rout or sand a pattern into. Could be a bit hard under foot though.

Cork, been done! - I stole the idea off one of those greenies wood surfboard forums.





I used 5mm thick floor mats from Bunnings but they add a bit of weight feel a bit thick underfoot so I bought a roll of 1.5mm thick self adhesive to stick on but have not had a chance yet to stick it on.

But I must say Cork is the grippiest grip I have ever had.

So get a grip and use cork!

Hey lacey, I like your ways- I enjoy making things often costing alot more but it is all part of the fun in making it.

No other pics, I didn't continue with that pattern as the gaps between the pieces felt a bit uncomfortable and was a bit thick under foot, that is why I order the thinner self adhesive cork.

You do not need to seal the cork as cork does not absorb much, look at champagne and old wine bottles.

A while back I had seen surfboard back grip made with cork and it looked great, I think it may have been on EBay.

Cork is a very cheap and effective alternative if not better than normal board grip, it last longer and a **** load grippier.

I would never spend $80+ on board grip again, it is a total rip off for what it is, they make that stuff for like a $1 a metre - someone is making a **** load.
