Get an OC1, will help with paddle technique and core strength which will improve both paddling and surfing.

Cross training for surfing, shortboard IMHO. Reason why is that performance SUP is closer in the way reacts out of turns than a longboard.

If you are on a good SUP it feels very similar to shortboard ijust extended and drawn out.

If for paddling and racing, as Ali says OC1 or OC6 or Surf Ski or all 3, you can't have too much fun eh?

Hey Phil, I am guessing you are referring to Kristi's training in which case you mean training for short high performance Supping as opposed to Longboard style Supping.

Although I haven't really ridden longboards (apart form a couple of times on a massive log perhaps) I would agree with CMC in that short SUPs surf much like a blown up shortboard and therefore the best training would be on a slightly blown up shortboard. For me, that would be something around 6'8" I would think - I used to ride 6'0" fish for small stuff which now feels like a skateboard.

That said I reckon the hardest thing for crew coming off shortboards to SUP is learning how to come off the lip properly - well it was/is for me. I started watching high performance longboard vids and Leco SUP vids amoung others to suss out the technique as it is definitely different to shortboard technique where you can push the tail out quite early with the back foot.

If you mean cross stepping you should definitely go the log.... But for high performance surfing a surfboard and a shortboard sup... unless that's not your thing?
I have ridden mals in the past pre sup days when it was 1foot.
I think for fitness good cross training would be mountain biking it hammers you and great for leg strength therefore more power!!

Just my opinion but depends why your doing it, if it's to learn how to do SB style surfing than go a SB, ie vertical surfing, bottom turning straight into the lip, re entries etc, if it's to learn how to cross step draw out a bottom turn and trim a board then go a lb. Turning a longboard would also probably help to learn to turn a big board.
If it's somewhere in between then maybe a fish or an egg/ minimal might suit and I'd say if you go a SB then still get a bit of width and thickness in the board so it's stable and paddles good.

A shorty like this would be a good start.

I agree with Lacey,surf the big tankers for a while and drop back to your HP board and see what happens.the thing will turn on a dime

It will still surf ok Phill, thruster is a tad slower but if you are surfing at OG its not a real fast wave from what I have seen
