Hi all,

Came across Coreban sups a few months ago by accident, I like the look of these two boards however the 9'0" is too small for me. I know it's another pop out but they are in distribution in Australia and I just wondered if any of you forumites have ridden one or have any opinions on them or Coreban the company in general?

cheers

kagey

I have seen 2 Corban SUPS and the shapes looked pretty good to me.

The outline had a nice flow to it and the foil of the board looked good.

They appeared to be quite HP and aimed at the short board end of the market.

The quaility of manufacture looked good and they were about middle of the range weight wise.

Just remember Ivan is not very tall and quite slight in build so they are not a big boys toy.

Thats all I can say.

Thanks Phil,

Just looking at the dimensions tho the 9'6" is 30' wide and 4 3/4 " thick so should be able to float me at 98kgs...surely?

Appreciate your info on the quality of them ta mate.

Hi Kagey,

I dont think float would be an issue I am 105 - 107 ( winter insulation added lol) and ride a 9'6 x 29 3/8 x 4 5/8. Stability is always a concern and is mainly controlled by volume distribution and rail shape.

It appeared to be ok on the corban, but I have not ridden one. The single concave will generate good speed and should paddle onto a wave a little easier than most as it flattens out the rocker.

I guess as usual DEMO one and see how you go.

Oliver,

I think that $2300 + grip is extortion for a 9'6 of any brand and you really would have rocks in your head to pay that much.

I am totally sick of these insane prices. Anyone got a shaping bay?

I wanna shape a Sick one maybee 8'"10 or so... I am thinking 9'0 Mal blank. Cut in half along the stringer. 6 Inches or so added (Glued in the middle in PU or similar) and then Vac Bag some more Foam thickness (and maybee balsa) into the deck.

Send it off to get professionaly epoxy glassed /sanded and painted and I reakon you'd be on a pearler for under a grand. (And exactly how you wanted it).

Anyway...Back to the shaping bay question.
i could hassle the guys at Island and probably get in there (But major hassle on the drive) and I would like to keep it close to home so I can spread the considerable job over a few days. - I live in Elwood.

Shame the old board factory in Moorabin shut down. That was unreal. Rory and Rod were classics.

Talked to the distributer today he said 1750 with grip and board cover I think. They look really good the 10 Icon will be out in sept good for chunky blokes like myself. The 9 6 has huge volume 150l I think. No demos over here though. Bugger.
Ivan rips on one but he could rip on a door.

Hey Hilly 1750 is far more reasonable.

Lets hope they see sense here.

Dave Boyd will soon be making epoxy sups in 5 different lengths so the local board range is gonna be awesome.

Thanks for the response guys, like you i'm a bit frustrated about the high cost and would like to see some local shapers putting some pressure on the global companies. I guess we'll see, only time will tell.

I do think that the 9'6" Performer looks the bomb tho! and agree Ivan does rip, but yes he probably could rip on a door lol

Kagey,

I don't think the hand laid local boards will be that cheap.

They are a relatively labour intensive process and have more steps involved than standard glass from what I have seen.

The simple factor is larger wider board = more time + more material.

Smaller volume means higher buy price on materials.

I am not convinced it will be the holly grail everyone thinks it will be.

DJ - I am in touch with the Coreban rep in Aus, he tells me he supplies a few shops but didn't specify where. He is very prompt responding to queries and appears to be quite keen to help (I am aware he's a businessman, but some are more helpful than others)

OG- What you have said makes perfect sense, I guess we'd all love it if sups where a grand cheaper ($NZ) so we could all have the new models which seem to be appearing every other month now as this new sport of ours continues to push the boundaries. I'm a relative newbie in the sup/surf community and am glad of sites like these as it helps me glean lots of info and get free advice and also maybe prevent me from buying a crappy board!

cheers
