After the Short Board Race we decided to race the "Dash and Dig" This had a great Paddle supplied by Starboard as the main prize and a Paddle Cover from Sunshine Coast Kitesurfing / SUP Fun for the runner up. This race style played out so much easier in my mind. Thought the concept should be sold to the personal Trainer Commando on the Biggest Loser as the ultimate torture test. The idea was simple. Get my kids to bury 10 numbered tennis balls in a 10m x 5m area, Paddle out about a kilometer (less for the juniors or those on surf SUPs, race to the beach, dig up the balls and then eliminate the numbers by a draw until you have a final winner. Simple huh...
Well.. the paddle sprint was the easy bit, we hit the beach not far apart and ran up to the marked area. Started digging and pile the sand we dug behind us potentially making any hidden ball behind twice as deep. I should have only told the kids to bury them hand deep instead of elbow depth that they did.
about 20 minutes into the dig we had found about 4 balls. One member had gone back to his ute and got a shovel. Everyone else was still head down and bum up digging madly for the chance to win the $500 paddle. After 6 balls were found I asked to call it time and draw from the ones we had but quitting wasn't in the mind of many. After 30 minutes there were still three balls buried and we called time. I think Trevor has a video on it that he will post latter.
We then went to the draw eliminating one at a time until only 2 remained. Ryan Keck was the winner of the Starboard paddle and John Nawrath was the winner on the paddle cover.
Mat Colefax who is a sponsor of our club with F-one was there to award one luck clum member a 4500 paddle for paying their membership within the first 30 days of the year. The winner of this was Ian Borland.
Great day and we got to see the new 14' Naish 23" limited edition. This board is going to be a weapon on the Lake. It will be good to see its times compare. I believe Kai Lenny will be out soon to do the Lake with us and bust out a time on it.
If he beats me it will only be because of the board
