What a legend.. and an old friend of mine from a local Mt bike club that we both raced in together called The fat tire fliers... I'll never forget the look on his face (when he was a kid about 12yrs old) when he checked out my Cannondale mt bike having the first XTR group set on it.. Good on ya Cadel and it's about time ..

Anyone not watching SBS right now turn it on.

Massive achievement Cadel that is huuuuuge!!!

Must admit he has proved me wrong. I thought his lack of aggression would cost him again this year. Bloody well done

I hope he can back it up again tonight !! I'm sure he can. It will be great for Australian sport, and all forms of cycling.

I'm sure he can do it! If he wins, in will be great in the future to have him do the special comments / host future broadcasts of Le Tour !

Unbelievable! Finally!
Caught it with a few of the boys after the SPSC presso last night..

I was with you Hilly up until the start of this years race. Cadel came into this race a different man though and fought the whole way. Last night he SMASHED them!!

To think after over 3,000kms of riding there was less than one minute between the top three riders and last night in just 42km Cadel took 2 1/2 minutes plus off all of them! What a legend!

As for Thomas Voekler the Frenchman he held the Jersey for I think, 9 days straight, that guy is a legend, what a fighter he was. It was worth just to watch him tear himself apart each night!

That was the most incredible few days of racing I have ever seen.

Do your self a favor and watch the highlights of the last 4 stages from stage 17 - unbelievable stuff!

I am still spinning at the enormity at what Cadel has achieved.
The first ever Australian to win the biggest (spectator wise) annual sporting event in the world!

Go Cadel!

It is a weird concept Simondo but they never attack the winner on the last day into Paris. It is a day for the sprinters only to win. Cadel has won the GC and the Yellow jersey!

The Tour being a familly institution for the the locals back home my memories go back to 84 or 85... I've always watched it every year since and with the years passing witnessed the arrival of non-europeans with amusement. Truth to be told no one is making jokes anymore these last 15yrs...

Unlike what has been said on SBS, Cadel has a big support over there (like any Aussies once the locals realised they're not poms!) and while locals might prefers big attackers a lot of them today praise him for what he has achieved in the hardest and biggest cycling race in the world. He's been there or therabouts over the years so it's a credit to his relentless attitude he finally bags one.
A worthy winner in my eyes

If you ever get the chance to go, please do, it's like watching mopeds go by... It puts things into perspective!

Great to hear Cadel won the tour. I've been a big fan of his for many years. Such an amazing achievment. Super happy for him.

As for non euros and the tour, Phil Anderson was the first non euro to wear the yellow jersey. That guy was an animal. Nicknamed 'the caveman' for awhile as I recall.

Cadel really did well in that time trial. Race of truth.

From his press conference today:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doping questions

Evans was asked two questions about doping but as often in the past, he preferred not to give detailed answers.

When asked if the fight against doping in recent years had lead to him being able to win this year's Tour de France, he said: "I don't think I'm in a position to comment on that."

The press conference ended with a question in French, with the journalist asking him if he thought it was important for a clean rider to have a clear stance and message against doping.

He replied in French: "I think the best thing for me is to show a good example. It's not up to me to comment on what other people think or on general opinion. All I can do is to be a good example."

Classy guy that Cadel.

A truly fantastic effort by Cadel and the BMC team. Follow it every year on SBS as I did some cycling years ago and got hooked on the road race stategy. Have stayed up until 2am Friday and Saturday nights then up again at 5.30 to go for a SUP. A bit weary now. I like how Cadel kept his cool and stayed on plan to reserve energy for the time trial even after the two stages in the alps. Great effort by the Schlecks and Voekler.
