Im looking to buy a sup for me and my 11yr old son to muck around on. Looking for something ideally that we can sail in light winds as well as surf. Im looking at the starboard 9'8" as the size of the 12fters scares me, for getting it to the beach ect. Does anyone have any experience with sailing these? Any advise is much appreciated

If you surf and are familiar with the 7S superfish, GSI are bringing out a 9'8" Uber Fish SU, 29.5" wide and 4.5" thick. I rode one at Noosa in March and jumped straight from the 11'6" Kalama onto the 7S and was amazed at the ease of use. Worth keeping an eye out for, should be available around September-ish for $1595.

Guess it depends more what you weigh and what you want to use it for - sailing, surfing, flat water etc. Should be fine for your 11yo. 9'8" may be a bit small for you if you are just starting out though.

Dan,

Matty h here.

you are pretty light - i dont reckon you'd have any problems at all with the 9'8.

If you ultimately want a surf board like experience this is the go.

If you are open to long board trimming (nose rides anyone?) - with good surfing also built in - check the 11'2 also. Thats my choice - but i am heavier than you and ride mostly in pretty average waves.

The windsurfing cross training benefits are thru the roof - you will be throwing the sailboard around heaps with the extra leg power you develop - Stand Up is not far off snowboarding for leg strength development.

And before you guys know it - i reckon you'll be getting a second one too..

Dan, My first time on a SUP I rode a 9'8" and had no trouble, I weigh in on the high side of 85kg.

You being a lot lighter should do it easy, I am going to do the same as Relex and go for the 11'2" mainly because of the bit better glide as I can see me using the SUP on both flat water for training and in the surf...so seems like the best all rounder.

thanks matt and 301, can you sail them though?, obviously Im not looking for high performance but somethimg that tracks resonably well I guess. Kind of looking for something we can go to the beach with and sail or surf depending on how we feel, versatility is the requirement I guess

You can sail the 9'8" although I have never done so.
It has a couple of points to attach a sail and also has provisions to have footstraps.

I believe most of the 11'2" Ultimate Blends sold in Aus have the ability to attach a sail, even though the SB site says otherwise.

i havent sailed one myself...from what i have seen the sailing aspect doesnt turn me on that much. The rig just seems to be in the way of the surfing action.

But others feel differnetly i'm sure

i'm just not into windsurfing unless the reos can be hot with some pace.
4 seasons ago I had alot of success running a starboard fish 97 as a light wind option. But still needed a good 12 to make it fun - ok - maybe 8 - 10 if it was cross off.

These days i would rather find a protected point and enjoy the freedom of SUP until it got windy enough to take out a 6.0 and a kode 80. about 15 knots.

i'm not much help here am i?

Can anyone chime in that has sailed the 9'8

Dan,
With you weight and the fact you will probally be surfing it rather than doing distance paddles, I would say the 9.0 starboard would be the go for sure.

Windy Miller has windsurfed the 9'8 and said that it was pretty good.
He might tell you more about it?
Ive windsurfed the 11'2 twice in light 15knot winds.
The waves were about knee high but not that good.

had some fun on the SB 9'8 at back beach lano and the naish 11'6 at main break lano, both lightish x on days with a reasonable swell running.

The SB was fun, planes ok, turns ok, carrys on down the wave when your windsurfer would have stalled....went through shorey and breakin waves ok, but you wouldn't want to be doing big jumps !!! if i had the spare coin and the room id have one of these for 5 - 15 kts when everyone else is waiting for the wind. good board for kids to learn to windsurf on as well, nice n tuff - bit like the go board.

The Naish is a pig, too big. Nearly got munched several times.just managed to out run the wave by the skin of my teeth.... too much board, sail too far away, even getting rig and board into the water is almost a 2 man job. BUT it's a better board to paddle

might be worth considering the sb 9 if your lightish in the weight department.

thanks for the help guys, the young fela took it fo a paddle and a sail yesterday in about 2kts and loved it,Ill probably go the 9'8" as its got a little more size which will hopefully make the paddling side a bit easier. Seemed to track well with the rig on it as well, which was my main concern. thanks again for the advise
