Came across this little clip of the boys throwing around some of the new bigger boards which evolved from Blane playing around with ocean racers.
Great clip. Thanks AA. Imagine how loose the 92 is going to feel after a few sessions on a 12 footer!
Reckon the 12 Gun and the 10 8 wood veneer gun looked way way better on the wave than the downwind hybrid board![]()

An observation about an issue that has been bugging me lately. Its all very well getting back - but only if the board and the wave has the speed to carry it. Those boards look to have lots of drive and speed.
Isn't it all about trim? Nothing worse than seeing someone anchored to back of the board and then seeing the board 'speedboat', or even worse, stall at the end of the turn completely - usually followed by frantic paddling to get going again.
Far better IMHO to see a dynamic surfer who moves about on the board and keeps the speed up through the transition to the next turn.
I like a long one (a board that is)....been riding a 12 footer but only 26 & a quarter wide so a bit of a wobblefest when paddling for a wave at times.
But such speed & glide when on a wave & very forgiving also.
Hopped back on my hero & nearly tore a leg muscle when I naively expected it to handle the same conditions as the twelver ![]()
Nice one AA,a day with some glide can be real fun.I had my 11'4 out at Atlas ,not too much talking going on while i was out there, but when i called it quits and caught one all the way to the beach on my last ride, the guy parked next to me,who had been out there said mate, that looks fun!I said yeah horses for courses, its all about having some fun.
hard to bet the feeling of burying a 12ft plus rail hard on its edge on a large wave face and travelling at mach 10 while watching everyone in the lineup scattering in random directions in fear of there lives
hahahaha.....only a standup goat boater knows the feeling..........hahahaha
One of my best surfing memories is taking off on an 8' wave on a surf mat and going over all the guys paddling out like speed bumps.
Ahhh the 70's.
