Rod i see your paddles in another post but thought this post more appropriate for the question:-Being a professional board and paddle maker what are your recomendations for paddle length? Because no'one would want to ruin a custom made paddle. Cheers Ian.

Hi UK, I think longer paddles are better than shorter paddles, they give you a better posture and you can sweep from further forward. I am 175 cm tall and SUP surf only, my paddle is 200cm which is 25cm taller than me.

Hey Brooko,

It is important to get a sweet paddle. I personally like having a spine on my bladed, this stops paddle walk when putting in the power. I have tried quite a few paddles and would have to say the best one so far is the Werner that is available in OZ. Naish re working on a super sweet paddle, but there is some delays in the factory, so I am not sure when we will see them. It's probably hard for you to demo a few, but maybe make the journey to Torquay or St' Kiilda and hook up with some of the krew and try a few different paddles. Once you do a few power strokes you'll work it out pretty quickly.

Every day that I paddle and almost every stroke that I make I'm thinking to myself..'Jeeez I love this paddle'..I'm talking about the Kialoa Shaka Pu'u.

There's no other paddle that comes close IMO..For me it's a feel thing..and they are beautifully made also.

If you're getting your new Naish from Strapper they sell them and that's your opportunity to get a good discount on one. (buying it with the board)

Hey DJ,
I currently use a Starboard carbon paddle, (only paddle I've ever used).
Have you ever used one, if so how do you rate it against the Kialoa in surf?

Hope to get the chance to demo a few other brands (boards & paddles)at Torquay on the 18th Oct.

Brooko, big swell coming your way this weekend.

Ian

I love my Werner. But I'd like to give the adjustable C4 Stendy a try - would be handy for traveling with the ULI. Does anyone sell them in the Gold Coast?

Yes Ian I've used the Starboard paddle but only in flat water and it's a cool paddle..It's got a nice soft feel..but does not have the spring of the Kialoa..or the thin rectangular shaped shaft.

You are welcome to try my Kialoa's at Torquay on Oct 18th.

Here's my thoughts on the good paddles out there that I've used.

If you like to paddle real hard/fast/powerfully the C4 is a great paddle for that and its dihedral keeps it tracking straight even when overpowering it but I find them a bit stiff for flat water cruising.

If I didn't use Kialoa I'd use the Werner..They track straight when pushed hard because of their dihedral and the have a nice shaped shaft and also a nice flex.

The Kialoa may not be the best paddle for all out hard paddling because it can flutter a bit because the blade is so flat and you may get too much flex in the shaft..But still I like them the most without a doubt.

I'd love to try one of the Kia Kaha paddles and see how they compare.

Also the new Naish Dovetail V paddles look interesting..Let's hope JB has one in time for Torquay in October.

It sounds like maybe the werner is the go, as i dont want a huge amount of flex when paddling back out through pushy whitewater.

Hey DJ, we have now touched on shaft flexibility and blade face type, what does every one think makes the best planing angle for the blade. I personally prefer 12 degrees.

Brooko, I have a Werner and I couldn't be happier. I am 100kg, and paddle mostly in the surf, but have a long paddle back out after each wave so I need a paddle that works well for everything. I cannot compare to other paddles, but It seems to be a well though out design, have a look at this video -

I agree with the 12 deg..That seems about right..I've seen 14 that seems too much..and 10 seems too flat.

I think less angle has a slight benefit at the start of the stroke but less benefit at the end of the stroke..and visa versa.

Laird often uses a 14 deg Quick blade and he must get serious push at the end of the stroke.

It also seems common to see a blade with some scoop in it now...The new Werners (not out here yet) seem to have heaps of blade scoop.

I'll put a flat edge on my Kialoa and my friends Werner and take a pic showing the amount of scoop..I think it's more for getting a smooth/silent entry into the water.

The first carbon paddle that I posted has a curved blade, this curve
runs from top to bottom of the blade not sideways curve. I
really get a lot of grip with that blade but I find that because the blade is so big that it gets overpowered by waves. The paddle I'm now building has a smaller blade with a flatface in all planes.
I also get a bit of paddle walking, but because of the larger diameter grip of my shaft, Ican control the wobbles and rarely notice them any more.

By custom making paddles out of balsa and composite I can dial in the degree of flex I need by adjusting the section thickness and blade size.
